Had the game been televised, it may have been best suited to air on Comedy Central, or perhaps the SyFy Channel.

Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash., near no-man’s land, played host to a 27-14 win for the ASU football team over Washington State on Saturday.

Things you’re not supposed to see on a football field happened.

The head coach getting knocked out by one of his own players, as ASU coach Dennis Erickson was.

The winning team committing six turnovers and missing two extra points, as ASU did.

The home team getting sacked 12 times, rushing for negative 54 yards and yet completing a 99-yard touchdown pass, as WSU did.

Despite some of the disturbing anomalies, the Sun Devils (3-2, 1-1 Pac-10), like their coach, lived to tell about it.

“I’m not as quick as I used to be, but I survived and we won the game, “ Erickson told KTAR after the game.

ASU sophomore wide receiver Gerell Robinson ran over Erickson in the third quarter on a pass attempt. Erickson, who was briefly knocked out, stayed on the sidelines for the rest of the game but said he was “ineffective” the rest of the way as the Sun Devils tried to run out the clock in the fourth quarter.

“They knocked me colder than a cucumber,” Erickson told The Associated Press after the game. “I’ve been hit before over the years and had a lot of people that would like to hit me.”

Erickson coached at WSU from 1987-88.

“They didn’t have to put a contract out on me,” Erickson said. “I feel like I just played.”

The Sun Devils’ defensive line, going up against a young and light WSU offensive line, went Dog the Bounty Hunter on the Cougar offense.

ASU senior Dexter Davis had 1.5 sacks, moving him into third place in school history with 28.5 and also had an interception of WSU freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel.

Sophomore defensive tackle Lawrence Guy and sophomore defensive end James Brooks both added 2.5 sacks of their own.

On 32 carries, WSU averaged -1.7 yards a pop.

Had ASU not allowed a late 99-yard touchdown pass from Tuel on a possession that was nearly a safety, the Sun Devils would have held WSU to under 100 yards of offense.

“Our defense was awesome,” Erickson said.

Those numbers were posted despite an ASU offense that once again put its defensive teammates in bad position.

Senior quarterback Danny Sullivan threw three interceptions, and ASU ball carriers had three fumbles.

“It’s ridiculous to turn the ball over six times like that,” Erickson said. “It’s inexcusable — just some dumb turnovers. If we don’t do that or cut them in half, it’s never even a game.”

It wasn’t all negative, however, as Sullivan led four ASU touchdown drives and tallied a touchdown pass and run himself in the first half.

ASU jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Sullivan hit senior wide receiver Kyle Williams for a 9-yard score at the 4:55 mark of the first quarter. He then orchestrated a nine-play, 78-yard drive with under two minutes before halftime, which he capped off himself with a 7-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds left before the break.

ASU senior running back Dmitri Nance set a career high with 113 rushing yards and added a touchdown, and Williams set a career game with 13 receptions for 126 yards while adding a 53-yard run on a reverse.

Freshman Cameron Marshall also recorded his first-career rushing touchdown, a 10-yard score to give ASU a 27-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.

As Erickson indicated last week, freshman quarterback Brock Osweiler saw the field in the second quarter. He completed three of his four passes for 21 yards, though none of his three drives resulted in points. He also fumbled a snap for one of the Sun Devils’ six turnovers

“I thought Brock came in for the first time and did some good things, and Danny made some plays there at the end [of the half], Erickson said. “But we have to be better at the [quarterback] position to beat Washington next week.”
