The fall season has shown that the No. 1 ASU women’s golf team is taking its defense of the national championship it won last season seriously.

The Sun Devils won the Stanford Intercollegiate last weekend with an accumulated score of 12-under 840, the second first-place finish for the team this fall.

The win was the 19th that ASU has won under head coach Melissa Luellen, who said she has been impressed with the solid play of her team.

“The girls played very solid all week and it was a great win over a good field,” Luellen said. “The whole fall season went really well. We have two wins and a [fourth-place tie,] and even the one we didn’t win, all five players did really well.”

Four of the five Sun Devil golfers finished in the top 10 at the Stanford tournament.

Sophomore Carlota Ciganda, the 2009 Pac-10 individual champion, finished the tournament in second place with a score of 5-under 208, while senior Juliana Murcia tied for third place with a score of 4-under 209.

Freshman Jennifer Johnson and junior Jaclyn Sweeney were close behind, as both finished in a tie for sixth place with scores of 1-under 212.

Sophomore Giulia Molinaro shot a final-round 72 to finish the tournament in 33rd.

ASU won the event by four strokes over Pac-10 rival UCLA.

The Sun Devils will end the fall portion of their season beginning Friday at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.

The same lineup, consisting of Murcia, Ciganda, Sweeney, Johnson and Molinaro will compete in the three-day tournament held at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall.

Luellen said the team will take the four months between the fall and spring season to rest and focus on school.

The team will kick off its spring season on Feb. 9 at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
