The ASU women’s golf team finished out their last tournament of the fall season with a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Fall Preview/Landfill Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.

The Sun Devils finished with a 25-over 889, eight strokes behind tournament winner Duke.

Pac-10 foe UCLA finished one shot off the pace in a tie for second place.

The Sun Devils’ standings fluctuated during the tournament, but the team remained in the top five throughout.

The team ended the first round of the tournament tied for second place with UCLA with a score of 5-over 293, just five shots behind the first-place USC.

Individually, the team scored impressively. Sophomore Carlota Ciganda, who was ASU’s top finisher with a 2-over 218 to place seventh, finished the first round of the tournament with a 4-under 68, including six birdies.

Freshman Jennifer Johnson shot a 1-over 73, while junior Jaclyn Sweeney shot a 2-over 74 to finish the first round. Senior Juliana Murcia and sophomore Giulia Molinaro both finished the first round with a score of 6-over 78.

Murcia did not compete in the rest of the tournament due to illness.

ASU coach Melissa Luellen was pleased with how the team competed during this tournament and during the fall season overall.

“We did pretty well with the fact that we had only four players and had to count every shot,” Luellen said. “Juliana was very sick and had a rough couple days with urgent care, but she is doing better.”

Luellen said the team will spend the next few months preparing for the spring season by both practice and relaxation.

“The girls will focus on school and practice,” Luellen said. “We had two first-place finishes and two wins in the fall. We certainly can improve on that but overall the girls are satisfied.”

The spring season will kick off for the team in Palos Verdes, Calif., on Feb. 9, for the Northrop Grumman
Regional Challenge.
