The ASU men’s golf team wrapped up its fall season by finishing in 12th place at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational with a score of 48-over (912).

The three-day tournament, held in Orlando, showcased 15 top-ranked schools.

No. 1 Oklahoma State shot a 17-over (881) to win the event and Alabama’s Bud Cauley was the medal winner with a 5-under 211.

The finish for the No. 2 Sun Devils fell short of expectations, ASU coach Randy Lein said.

“This golf course is so demanding that it really shows us our strengths and weaknesses,” Lein said. “It shows you where you need to work. We proved that we can beat anyone when we’re on our game, but we also proved that we’re vulnerable if we’re not.”

Junior Scott Pinckney was the top finisher for the Sun Devils, placing in a tie for seventh with a 4-over 220.

Senior Knut Borsheim finished just two shots behind Pinckney with a 6-over 222 to tie for 16th.

Junior Jesper Kennegard (14-over 230), senior Tristan Bierenbroodspot (26-over 242) and senior Braxton Marquez (32-over 248) rounded out the scoring for ASU.

The high round for the team went to Borsheim, who notched a 2-under 70 in the first round.

Marquez pulled a back muscle during the ninth hole of the third round, Lein said.

Though the team did not finish as high as it would have liked, Lein said he is optimistic heading into the spring season.

“We finished 12th out of a 15-school tournament, which isn’t very good,” the coach said. “I’m very proud of Scott and Knut because they both played solid, which they have all fall, and Scott finished in the top-10 again.”

Lein said the team will spend the time between now and the spring season to focus on schoolwork and spend time with family.

The first tournament of the spring for the Sun Devils is Big Island Invitational in Hawaii, which will tee off Feb. 3.
