Who knew ASU’s game versus UNLV Saturday night would come down to a failed field goal attempt from sophomore Thomas Weber?
After UNLV kicked a field goal in the on their first drive in overtime, Weber had his potentially game-tying attempt blocked.
As a result, the No. 15 Sun Devils were shocked by the Runnin’ Rebels 23-20.
The Sun Devils looked to have the game in hand, up 20-10 in the fourth quarter, but late scoring drives sent the game into overtime.
With 3:03 left on the clock, the UNLV offense drove down the field and scored a touchdown on a one-handed catch by wide receiver Phillip Payne to tie the game.
The Sun Devils played conservatively throughout, relying heavily on the running game.
Junior Dimitri Nance led the Sun Devil rushing attack with 92 yards on 20 carries.
Junior Shaun DeWhitty, who has missed some time with a hamstring injury this season, added to the attack with 48 yards on 13 carries.
The Sun Devil’s problems on offense came on third down, as they converted just 2 of 9 attempts, missing numerous opportunities to put points on the board.
Senior quarterback Rudy Carpenter threw two touchdown passes, but one interception as well.
