The ASU swimming and diving team started its 2009-2010 season with mixed results over the weekend, as the women’s team went 1-1 while the men’s team dropped a pair of matches.
The women’s team defeated Utah 194-102 in its season opener, while the men’s team dropped the match, 187-113.
Junior Ashley Daly took first in the 1000-yard freestyle against Utah with a time of 10:34.59.
Freshman Paige Shultz contributed to the win against Utah by winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.04.
Senior Jamie Martinez took first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with times of 58.68 and 2:05.30, respectively, beating her teammate, freshman Lizzy Luttrell, who came in second in both events.
Sophomore diver Brittany Jumer took first place on the women’s 3-meter with a score of 288.60.
Freshman Riley McCormick placed first for the men’s 1-meter with a score of 342.00, and freshman Cameron Bradshaw placed second (310.88).
Both teams fell short against BYU. The women’s team lost 151-92, and the men’s team lost 154-88.
Shultz finished first again in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.78, while sophomore Jordyn Green won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.86.
On the men’s team, sophomore Xavier Mohammed took first in three events.
He won the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.50), the 400-yard IM (4:04.69) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:35.49).
Junior Nolan Ruane placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.06, and senior Max Laney won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.43.
