ASU women’s tennis coach Sheila McInerney was named the Sports Leader honoree for the Young Women’s Christian Association “Tribute to Women” luncheon that will be held on Feb. 25.
McInerney, one of 10 other honorees, has been the head coach of the ASU program for 26 years.
She said she was excited about the honor, especially from a well-renowned organization like the YWCA.
“It’s nice when what you do is recognized,” she said.
The YWCA is a nonprofit organization that develops opportunities for women’s growth in leadership and justice.
McInerney has an overall record of 373-238 and has taken the Sun Devils to 18 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances.
She said that she takes a lot of pride in her profession and how her athletes perform not only on the court but also in the classroom.
“When you are a coach, you are basically a teacher,” she said.
The luncheon will be held on the afternoon of Feb. 25 at the Arizona Biltmore.
