Dave’s Doghouse, a hot dog restaurant located on University Drive and Forest Avenue, is preparing to open a second location on the Tempe campus next semester.
The new restaurant will open in Wilson Hall, west of Danforth Chapel, and will accept Maroon and Gold dollars as well as Sun Dollars, said Jim Emmons, director of operations for Aramark.
Owner David Cheren, 71, of Scottsdale, said he is excited about his new venture and hopes to have it open by the time students return to school in January.
“It’s going to be a squeeze-in,” he said. “We are going to try to get a good deal of it done over the time that people are out over Christmas vacation, but we’re working very hard.”
The restaurant will be adjacent to a coffee location Aramark plans to open, which will also have options for lunch and breakfast, Emmons said.
“The main component of that location will be coffee, but there’s also going to be other menu choices as well,” he said.
Cheren said the second Doghouse will have a similar menu to the original, with the addition of a new breakfast sandwich to correspond with the next-door business’s coffee.
“Really, they’re going to be delicious,” he said. “It’s a sausage slider that’s slightly spicy … and on it, we’re going to have a poached egg. I’m hoping that’s going to be a nice breakfast item.”
Though Cheren said he is excited about the new restaurant, he also said it will be a different challenge than opening the original Doghouse in 2002.
“The kids get out of class, they have a few minutes to get going, they have to come in and eat and then they’re off to class again, so for us it’s going to be a matter of having to work at a different speed,” he said. “I want the food to be just as good, but I’ve got to get it out to people faster.”
The restaurant may even be a late-night option for students, Emmons said.
“[Cheren is] talking about keeping this thing open possibly past midnight if there’s enough traffic to warrant that,” he said.
Emmons also said he thinks Dave’s Doghouse is a great concept.
“I think the quality is outstanding,” he said. “He’s got a menu that the students will perceive as great value. He’ll have a wide audience — from students to faculty.”
Cheren said he always hoped a big company would come along and take interest in the Doghouse.
“Essentially, Aramark is now saying, ‘We like the concept, and we’d like to try it out,’” he said. “I’m going to try my best to make it very, very popular, very successful and show Aramark that this was a good decision on their part.”
The agreement makes the Dave’s Doghouse sub-contractors under Aramark, Cheren said.
Japanese language senior Nastasha Hiatt said she likes going to the restaurant about once a month because the Doghouse is not too crowded, and she likes the hot dogs.
“I like to meet my friends [at Dave’s Doghouse], where it’s not really crowded and just enjoy really good food,” she said.
Hiatt said she liked the idea of the new location on campus.
“If it’s closer to the students, that’ll be nice, but I still like this place a lot,” she said.
Cheren said he intends to be more active on the Tempe campus after the opening of the second Dave’s Doghouse.
“It’s been fun to be around young people, and I especially feel good when they say nice things about the food — and that’s a pretty common occurrence,” he said.
