An injury has made ASU football coach Dennis Erickson’s decision on which quarterback to start on Saturday at Oregon a whole lot easier.
Erickson announced following practice Wednesday that true freshman Brock Osweiler will make his first collegiate start when the Sun Devils travel to Eugene to face the Ducks in rowdy Autzen Stadium.
“He’s not making every perfect throw [and] not making every perfect read, [but] he’s learning,” Erickson said of Osweiler. “[Making his first start in Autzen Stadium] will be a tremendous learning experience for him.”
Senior Danny Sullivan, who has started all nine of ASU’s games so far this season, did not throw at all in practice Wednesday because of a biceps injury, and Osweiler took all the first-team repetitions. Sullivan was also limited in practice on Tuesday and had an ice pack wrapped around his arm.
Osweiler replaced Sullivan for the entire second half of the Sun Devils’ 14-9 loss to USC last week and completed 11 of his 27 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown.
Erickson said Sullivan might still see action against UO if his health improves by Saturday.
“We’ll go into that game and see what happens,” Erickson said. “Because of Danny’s experience sitting there, I would probably put him in a little sooner than [I’d put in] Brock, so it could happen.”
Erickson also said he will continue to use sophomore Samson Szakacsy, who practiced with the second team Wednesday, in special situations.
Corner depth thin
The depth of ASU’s secondary took another hit Tuesday when senior cornerback Terell Carr was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.
Carr was arrested and booked into Maricopa County Jail Tuesday on suspicion of three misdemeanors: driving with a suspended or revoked license, disorderly conduct and assault, according to multiple reports. Police reports were unavailable Wednesday because offices were closed for Veteran’s Day.
Erickson also said following practice Tuesday that junior cornerback Omar Bolden, who has not played since the Sun Devils’ game at Georgia on Sept. 26, will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Redshirt freshman Deveron Carr and senior Pierre Singfield practiced with the first team Tuesday and Wednesday and should start against Oregon, while junior LeQuan Lewis and sophomore Josh Jordan will be the backups. Jordan was not in pads Tuesday because of an ankle injury but did practice Wednesday.
“Right now we’re limited at the corner position, so we get to play, so I’m excited about that,” Singfield said. “We go in and watch extra film and just make sure that we [play] assigned football soundly, [and that we’re] focused and locked in on our position and what we need to do as a defensive back staff.”
Injury update
Senior center Thomas Alitieri returned to practice Tuesday after missing the past two games with knee injury.
Sophomore Garth Gerhart, who started the past two games at center, practiced at guard.
