A season of ups and downs continued this past Friday for the ASU volleyball team, with this down dampening some of the team’s recent success.

The Sun Devils were swept by No. 18 UA 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 20-25) in Tucson to drop ASU to 13-13 overall and 3-11 in the Pac-10.

The loss to the Wildcats (18-7, 7-7 Pac-10) marks the first time since 2004 that UA swept the season series, as the Wildcats defeated the Sun Devils 3-0 earlier this year in Tempe.

The Sun Devil offense struggled all night, hitting .158 as a team.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Reaves had a season-low eight kills to lead ASU while sophomore outside hitter Sofie Schlagintweit recorded seven.

Schlagintweit also had three service aces and two block assists to score a team high 11 points.

The first set started as a back-and-forth affair, with eight ties and two lead changes.

But after the two teams were tied 8-8, UA went on a 7-1 run to pull away in the set and finish with a 25-19 victory.

Set No. 2 again was a back-and-forth affair that saw eight tie scores, but once again, ASU couldn’t get a late lead to close it out.

The Sun Devils battled back a couple of times, however. ASU was down 9-5 early before rallying back to tie it and then was down 20-16 before tying it up at 21.

After forcing the tie, though, UA went on a 4-0 run to close out set No. 2.

The third set saw ASU take its first significant lead of the match, only to see it slip away.

The Sun Devils came out swinging in the third set, hitting .237 and taking a 17-13 lead. To that point, ASU had never trailed in the set.

But UA then went on an 8-1 run to take the lead and eventually put the Sun Devils away, 25-20.

While no ASU player had double-digits in kills, UA had three. Junior outside hitter Whitney Dosty (14), junior outside hitter Tiffany Owens (11), and sophomore middle blocker Courtney Karst (11) led a three-pronged attack that saw UA hit .248 as a team, 90 points higher than ASU.
