If you end up at Club Red this Friday, you might just find yourself thinking you’ve stepped back in time to when the Sunset Strip was the haven of rock ‘n’ roll. The Los Angeles — by way of Sweden — rock band Vains of Jenna is bringing its vintage rock ‘n’ roll sound to Tempe in support of its latest release, “The Art of Telling Lies.”

Singer and guitarist Lizzy DeVine formed the band with longtime pal, and the band’s lead guitarist, Nicki Kin in 2005, and after a successful American debut at the famed Los Angeles venue Whiskey A Go Go that same year, the band has been riding a wave of hype here in the States that has allowed it to open for hair-band heavyweights such as Poison and Ratt.

The four transplants from Sweden have taken up full-time residency in Los Angeles because, as DeVine explains, “If you make it big in Europe, it’s hard to make it anywhere else. If you make it in the States, your chances of making it everywhere else are much better.”

The band has been garnering interest from American record labels, DeVine said, and although he couldn’t reveal much more, it certainly seems that the band is on the upswing.

Constant touring has built the band a dedicated following and even though he says he and the band are happy with the new album, DeVine and his bandmates have become road warriors.

“We want to be on tour,” he said.

With a sound that can be described as sleaze rock or glam metal, bringing its take on rock ‘n’ roll to the people seems to be the right approach.

“We’re a straight up rock ‘n’ roll band with a few catchy songs,” DeVine said, adding that, “Our live show is very raw and energetic.”

With lofty goals — “We’re aiming for the top,” DeVine said — the intimate Club Red poses a good opportunity to catch Vains of Jenna before it takes the next step to larger venues.

So whether you’re in the mood for a bit of nostalgia or just some good, old-fashioned head banging, DeVine promises that Vains of Jenna will be there to put on one hell of a rock show.
