Devil Dish

Sun Devil Stadium wasn’t the only place the madness took place.

I was captivated on Saturday by a feast of college football rivalry games that left even my insatiable appetite as full as I was from the plentiful Thanksgiving meal two days earlier.

ASU-UA, Kansas-Missouri, Ole Miss-Mississippi and BYU-Utah all provided intense moments and thrilling finishes.

Rivalry games are so fun to watch, it got me to thinking: Why don’t we settle all of our conflicts with a little bit of good ole-fashioned pigskin showdown?

For instance, while our courageous American troops are over in Iraq helping the country develop a new government, why don’t they also teach them how to play football?

Then, if, God forbid, we engage in another conflict with the Middle Eastern nation at some point down the road, we can settle it on the gridiron.

And what if, instead of destroying his opponents in the English army on the battlefield, Sir William Wallace — Scotland’s greatest hero — instead tried to quarterback his team to victory on the football field in a stadium filled with unruly 14th-century fans.

We might miss out on a little blood, but we would certainly be in for a whole lot of excitement.
