Dec. 31, 2004 — After a heartbreaking loss at UA to end the regular season, the ASU football team headed to El Paso to square off against Purdue in the Sun Bowl.

But there was one problem: The Sun Devils would be forced to play without star quarterback Andrew Walter, who separated his shoulder against the Wildcats.

Enter sophomore Sam Keller, who made quite the impression in his first career start.

Keller threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns, including a 19-yard score on a screen pass to freshman running back Rudy Burgess with 43 seconds left to lift the Sun Devils to a 27-23 come-from-behind victory in a game that saw four lead changes in the fourth quarter.

Keller had a rocky ending to his Sun Devil career when he transferred to Nebraska after losing his starting job to then-sophomore Rudy Carpenter in a dramatic quarterback controversy before the 2006 season, but that comeback win in El Paso will go down as one of the most exciting bowl wins in ASU history.
