Dissecting a decade of ASU sports
June 2005 — The 2005 postseason run was quite the wild one for the ASU baseball team.
After rallying from five runs down to beat defending national champion Cal State Fullerton 9-8 in Game 3 of the Fullerton Super Regionals to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 1998, there were more heart-pounding moments to come in Omaha.
Following a 5-3 loss to Nebraska in its first game, ASU rebounded to beat Tennessee 4-2 to set up a rematch with the Cornhuskers in a must-win situation for both teams.
What transpired was one of the craziest college baseball games in recent memory.
Jeff Larish hit a school and College World Series record of three home runs, including a game-tying blast in the bottom of the ninth inning that countered a three-run dinger by NU’s Andy Gerch at the top of the frame that gave the Cornhuskers a 7-5 lead.
J.J. Sferra then hit a bloop single in the 11th inning to snag an 8-7 victory an eliminate the hometown club.
“That was special,” ASU coach Pat Murphy said following the game. “This today was almost unbelievable.”
ASU was later eliminated by Florida in the semifinals, but the Sun Devils finished ranked No. 3 in the polls.
