May 22, 2009 — The 2009 season was a dominating one for the ASU women’s golf team, so it was only fitting that the campaign ended in some new hardware for the most decorated program in NCAA history.

The Sun Devils captured the 2009 national championship — its first since 1998 and seventh overall — by running away from the field in the final round at the Caves Valley Golf Course in Owing Hills, Md.

“It’s great to truly bring the program back to national prominence,” ASU coach Melissa Luellen told the State Press at the time. “That’s been our goal, and we’ve been knocking at the door the last couple years, and it just feels great to get it done.”

ASU was 11 shots back after round two but fought back and pulled away on the final day to win by eight strokes. Azahara Munoz, who won the 2008 individual title, finished fourth to lead the Sun Devils.
