ASU student shot, killed in Mesa

Update: Text messaging linked a suspect to the two men, and the man is currently in police custody.

Two men, including one confirmed ASU student, were shot dead in Mesa early Wednesday, Mesa Police reported.

The two men were identified by police as Tyler Webster, a pre-med biochemistry major, and Olek Wladyszewski, whom police have not confirmed to be an ASU student.

Webster made a 911 call around 1:15 a.m. after he and Wladyszewski were shot. He could only identify the shooter as a Hispanic male in his 20s, police said.

Upon arrival, police found Wladyszewski dead in the driver’s seat of a car and Webster badly injured and unconscious in the passenger’s seat. Webster was taken by air to a local hospital, where he later died.

Webster and Wladyszewski were both residents of Mesa, but not living there at the time, police said. It was unclear why they were in the area or what motive the shooter might have had.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
