I’ll never be paid to play a sport (and could possibly be paid to stop trying to play basketball), but I enjoy challenging myself physically and consider myself athletic.

Karate became my sport when I was 8, and I’ve dedicated time and energy to it for about 10 years.

Then I went to college to study journalism by day and study/try to have a social life by night.

I stopped going to karate and barely practiced at home.

Now, two years later, I’m very rusty but I'm jumping back into it in hopes of getting my black belt before I graduate.

All of this has made me wonder about the students who aren’t on athletic teams but enjoyed playing sports in high school.

Do they still make it a priority? Or, like me, does it fall by the wayside?

I think that even though a sport won’t become my career, there are enough benefits to make it worth pursuing.

Next time you’re done with classes and are about to watch some TV, spend 30 minutes rediscovering the athletics you loved but now seem to have no time for.

Or take it to the next level and join a club team at ASU or buy a rock gym membership.

You will be rewarded for your efforts with a healthier body and a less stressed mind.
