Fashion's Night Out is a night for the fashion-conscious that takes place once every year all around the globe.

On Thursday September 6, fashionistas gathered at their favorite stores to celebrate an evening of shopping.

Starting in 2009, it was created in New York City by legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour with the intention of boosting the fashion industry and the fashion economy during the recession. The event was a huge hit, spreading to more than 250 cities and 12 countries the next year. Stores stay open late, show their new seasons line, have lots of giveaways and prizes and host events with cocktails and djs.

Style swept the Valley Thursday night with events taking place at Scottsdale Fashion Square, the Biltmore and Scottsdale Quarter. I decided to check out the events at Scottsdale Fashion Square for myself, as a newbie to fashions night out I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

My first stop was Free People where I found a DJ, cocktails and an overwhelming new fall line being modeled. They redid their display for the event, taking on an “enchanted forest” theme for fall. Girls were styling and socializing to celebrate the event.

Next, I strutted down to Neimen Marcus for “The Art of Fashion” exhibit. Here, there was a meet and greet with artist John Palmer and designer Oday Shakar. John Palmer released some of his new art work that is now displayed in the department store. Outside of the store was a fashion show with new trends for Fall. Ken Howie, Phoenix’s Art Museum photographer, was also there photographing and observing. Makeovers took place in the cosmetics department, and bites to eat by local catering companies were spread throughout the store.

Overall Phoenix’s Fashion's Night Out was a pretty quiet event, unlike what I imagine New York or Paris would be like. I expected more shops to have events taking place, but just as Phoenix is a growing city, so is the Fashion scene. I am excited to see the event grow in coming years.
