Police have identified the man who drowned Monday morning at Tempe Town Lake as Christopher Robin Gonzales, 34.

Witnesses told Tempe police they saw a man in the water near the bridge. Two subjects took pictures of the bridge just before the incident and the man was visibly struggling to stay above the water, Tempe police Sgt. Jeffrey Glover said in an email.

Witnesses called police around 3 a.m., and the victim was underwater when officers arrived.

Glover said a Tempe Fire Department dive team recovered the body 30 minutes after the incident.

According to azfamily’s website, the witness and a Tempe police officer tried to pull the victim from the water but neither were able to reach him.

Police did not provide the exact location where divers pulled the man out of the water.

Glover said alcohol may have been an influence, but police are still waiting for a medical examination report.

Police do not suspect foul play was involved, Glover said.
