Coming soon to a Tempe campus near you is the Student Recreation Center (SRC) expansion. On the south side of campus, the presence of cranes, construction and chaos has interfered with our lives when we pass by the corner of Apache Drive and McAllister Avenue.

The expected finish date for the Wendell Burnette architectural project is August of 2013. The expansion will add about twice the space as the original SRC complex. The expansion includes a climbing wall, three small gyms and multi-purpose gyms for cardio and strength training.

The preparation for the Tempe expansion project has been in the works for over a year now, dating back to April of 2011. The newest additions include a roof for the complex being brought in the week after Thanksgiving.

The Tempe expansion will also include three more full-size basketball courts, a live well cafe and an indoor running track.

The Tempe campus is not the only campus this year to get a renovation done.

In fact, all four campuses will be receiving an upgrade to their recreation facilities.

The Polytechnic and West campuses have been in the process of building a state of the art Sun Devil Fitness Center to host more intramurals and sporting events. The brand new fields, multi-purpose studios and the outdoor leisure pool will be opening next month.

For the Downtown Phoenix campus, the Y @ ASU is a planned 64,000 square-foot expansion to the YMCA only a block away from the campus. The new facility will have five stories and be the new home for campus sporting events to downtown ASU students. The expected opening month is August 2013.

The new facilities are a great way to get involved in the many different intramurals that the SRC sponsors. If you missed out on the fall semester intramurals, be sure to sign up soon for the spring semester as the schedule for events is up on the SRC website.
