No. 1 ASU hockey downs No. 15 Stony Brook in shootout

For the second straight night, not only did an ASU hockey game go into overtime, but a shootout decided the winner, as the Sun Devils defeated Stony Brook 2-1 Friday.

No. 1 ASU (24-4 ACHA) entered its matchup against No. 15 Stony Brook after a long night Thursday against Liberty, and the game against the Seawolves (9-9 ACHA) took just as long. Tied at one after regulation, the five-minute overtime went scoreless and a shootout commenced.

Unlike Friday where seven rounds went by without a goal, Stony Brook senior captain Mike Cacciotti opened the shootout with a top-shelf score. Senior Dan Anderson answered back immediately for the Sun Devils. After junior goaltender Joe D’Elia blocked the next two shots, junior captain Colin Hekle snuck the puck into the back of the net for an ASU victory.

“The last couple of shootouts, I went in there without a plan,” Hekle said. “I saw Anderson go in there with a high glove. ... Thought that’s what I was going to do, and luckily, it turned out well.”

After a scoreless first period, Stony Brook jumped on the board first when sophomore Ryan Cotcamp scored with 3:57 remaining in the second period. It was going into the break that ASU turned things around.

Once the third period started, it was all Sun Devils.

“In the third period, we looked like ourselves again,” ASU coach Greg Powers said.

The Sun Devils outshot the Seawolves 26-2 in the third period and overtime.

Sophomore Kale Dolinski added his team-leading 26th goal from junior Danny McAuliffe's assist.

“I’m proud of the guys for not giving up and coming back and gutting out a win,” said Powers. “It was a cleaner game. It was better than last night. It’s a step in the right direction.”
