Alternative rock band Save The Future plays on stage at Devil Palooza's Battle of the Bands contest. Save The Future won ASU's battle of the band contest, beating out 3 other bands in attendance. (Photo by Dominic Valente)At ASU’s Polytechnic Campus, PAB’s Devilpalooza hosted the 2013 Battle of the Bands competition. The only rule was that one member from each band had to be a current ASU student. The four local bands competed for the prize of a paid show at the Tempe campus on March 20, 2013, co-sponsored by the Phoenix New Times.
The event went on from 2:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., the first band to perform was The Silver Suits. The band opened the Battle of the Bands with its folk acoustic tunes. At 3:15, Meaningless! Says The Teacher then performed. Its music was atmospheric, leading with practically no vocals. At 4 p.m., The Saving Pointe played its punk influenced music with energy and gusto. At 4:45 p.m., Rescue the Future finished the Battle of the Bands with its crowd-winning styling, which was a combination of indie, pop and rock music.
All the bands fought admirably, but there could only be one winner. This year’s winner for the Battle of the Bands was Rescue the Future. What made Rescue the Future stand out from the other three bands was its addition of a female vocalist. The band includes vocals by Tanner Goodman, Nick Miller and Teal Reader on guitars and Sam Kerby on the keyboard. The band also includes Cameron Farnsworth on the bass and Harrison Crum on drums. The six of them make up this year’s winners, Rescue the Future.
A day after the competition, its EP “We’ll Write Away” was released on iTunes featuring its new single, “Secrets.” “We’ll Write Away” will be the band’s second EP with its first being “Love Meets Time Machine”, which was release in 2009. Thanks to the PAB’s Devilpalooza and the Battle of the Bands, Rescue the Future will be playing at the Tempe campus on March 20 on the Memorial Union's north stage.
