Mikhail Chester, a professor of civil, environmental and sustainability engineering in the ASU School of Sustainability, has extensively studied urban environments and the issue of urban heat in Phoenix and Maricopa County. However, there has been a lack of research regarding the tangible effects of urban heat, especially in regards to various vulnerable populations within the city.
To address this, Chester has teamed up with two researchers from UCLA: Stephanie Pincetl, the director of the California Center for Sustainable Communities at UCLA, and David Esienman, a professor in the UCLA Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research. Together, their research will encompass both Maricopa and Los Angeles counties and seek to find solutions that protect and empower the segments of our populations that are at the highest risk.
