Missy Franklin and Cal too much for ASU swim and dive

The ASU men and women’s swim and dive teams both fell to California this afternoon. Cal defeated the men’s team, 178-113, and the women’s team, 229-69.

Although the Sun Devils came out on the bottom, there were several strong performances across the board.

Junior Hailey Casper finished first place in both of her events.

“Hailey was awesome,” diving coach Mark Bradshaw said. “Not just because she won both events. She competed very well.”

Casper scored 335.03 points in the three-meter event and 307.50 points in the one-meter event.

Senior male diver Riley McCormick also finished first in both the one-meter and three-meter events as well. McCormick scored 313.73 and 397.58 points in his events.

Freshman Luke Clohessy competed in his first dual meet situation and Bradshaw was pleased with his performance. He placed second in both the one-meter and three-meter events.

The team looks ahead to its meet tomorrow against Stanford by stepping up their game.

“Stanford is much better at diving,” Bradshaw said. “It’ll be a challenge for us but if we do what we did today, and maybe make a few adjustments, we’ll be able to compete tomorrow.”

In swimming, senior Alex Coci topped the competition with two wins of his own. He placed first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:47.92 and first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.58. Coci finished almost two-and-a-half seconds faster than his competitors in the 200 butterfly.

Senior Tristin Baxter finished over five seconds faster than her competition in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:55.56.

Cal freshman and Olympian Missy Franklin made for some tough competition for the Sun Devils. She won first place in all four of her events, racking up some major points for Cal in the process.

The Sun Devils face Stanford Saturday in Palo Alto as the number of dual meets dwindles down this season. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
