The ASU wrestling team was not able to finish in a couple of very close bouts on Sunday in Palo Alto, California and fell to the Stanford Cardinal 18-13.

In the end this dual came down to two losses for the Sun Devils. After winning the first two bouts, redshirt senior heavyweight Chace Eskam matched up with Stanford’s redshirt freshman Nathan Butler. Eskam, who is on the smaller side for a heavyweight, gave up a significant amount of weight to Butler but was close to eking out a win with just seconds left in the bout. However he was taken down by Butler with just four seconds left to lose the match 3-2.

Eskam’s loss started a four-bout losing streak for ASU that also included losses from junior Ares Carpio at 125 pounds, sophomore Judson Preskitt at 133 pounds and junior Matt Kraus and 141 pounds. Preskitt is still looking for his first win as a Sun Devil.

ASU was able to get back on the winning track with a win from redshirt freshman Christian Pagdilao who continues his hot streak. It appeared Pagdilao would be able to score a major decision but only secured a 9-5 decision over Stanford’s Garrett Schaner. Pagdilao has now won 12 straight bouts and remains a perfect 8-0 in duals this season.

The next bout, at 157 pounds, was another crucial loss that may have swung the dual Stanford's way. ASU sophomore Oliver Pierce and Stanford’s Maxwell Hvolbek were tied 1-1 after three periods and went to a sudden-death overtime period. Pierce was taken down just a few seconds in, giving Hvolbek a 3-1 win.

With just two bouts left in the dual, one of them being ASU freshman Jacen Petersen going up against Stanford’s Jim Wilson. Wilson, who is one of the top wrestlers at 165 pounds in the conference, all but sealed the duel in favor of the Cardinal.

Wilson lived up to his standing, racking up over five minutes of riding time and dominating Petersen for the entire bout. Petersen was able to fight off a major decision loss and only lost in an 8-1 decision.

It’s noteworthy that it was Petersen to get the bout at 165 pounds, not Joel Smith as it was against Boise State on Saturday night. Smith is likely still dealing with whatever injury that kept him from finishing his dual against the Broncos.

Blake Stauffer continued his journey to compete for a national title by starting the dual with another major decision win. Scoring 10 points while holding Stanford’s Ryan Davies to just a single point.

The Sun Devils ended the meet with a win from junior Ray Waters at 174 pounds in a 5-3 decision, but that was still not enough to overcome the Cardinal.

The Sun Devils will next be in action in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 7 for the Edinboro open.
