Tempe Police: Man steals from construction site, gets nailed for burglary

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Monday:

  • A 37-year-old man was arrested Jan. 4 on the 100 block of East Lemon Street on suspicion of burglary, giving a false report to officers, marijuana possession, drug paraphernalia possession and dangerous drug possession, according to a police report.

The man entered a construction site without reason to be there or permission to take a box of nails, police reported.

The man told a security guard on site that he was an employee, but he became violent when the guard asked the man to prove it, according to the report.

The security guard then used a Taser on the man, police reported.

The man began complaining of heart pain after the Taser was used, and officers transported him to Tempe St. Luke's Hospital, according to the report.

The man gave hospital staff and officers a false name and date of birth several times, before he was convinced to tell them his real name, police reported.

While the man was receiving treatment, officers found marijuana, meth and a syringe in his pocket, according to the report.

The man denied trying to steal from the construction site and giving a false name to officers because "(he) was high on bath salts and meth" at the time, police reported.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, according to the report.

  • A Mesa man was arrested Jan. 3 at the 1800 block of East Rio Salado Parkway on suspicion of retail theft, trafficking in stolen property and contributing to delinquency, according to a police report.

Target employees called officers after the man’s 9-year-old stepson stole two Bluetooth speakers from the store, police reported.

Employees told officers that the man was near his son when he stole the items, saw it happen and did nothing about it, according to the report.

The man’s son told employees to “ask (his) dad” why he was shoplifting, police reported.

The man said he didn’t know what his son had done, even though he appeared to be acting as lookout for his son, according to the report.

Video surveillance showed that the man and his son had stolen two speakers the day before, police reported.

Officers found an online site where the man had tried to sell three Bluetooth speakers shortly after they stole them the day before, according to the report.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, police reported.

The man’s son was released into the custody of his mother, according to the report.
