Tempe police: Man falls asleep between light rail tracks on way to work


Tempe Police reported the following incident Wednesday:

 A 52-year-old Avondale man was arrested May 15 on the 700 block of West Washington Street on suspicion of trespassing on the light rail, according to a police report.

Light rail security officers said they saw the man on video surveillance sleeping between the light rail tracks on the light rail bridge, according to the report.

An officer approached the man and put him in handcuffs, according to the report. A light rail security officer said they would aid in prosecution, police said.

The man said he was trying to get to his workplace in Mesa but had missed the last light rail train out to Tempe, according to the report. He said that by following the light rail tracks, he could find his way his job site, according to the report.

The man said he did not see the “no trespassing” signs, according to the report. The man said he was homeless and did not have any other form of transpiration, police said.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail where they were booked and held to see a judge.
