Sun Devils, residents swim, bike and run at 10th annual triathlon at Tempe Town Lake

More than 20 of ASU’s strongest and toughest athletes participated in the 10th annual Lifetime Tri Tempe triathlon Sunday morning at Tempe Town Lake. The triathlon course covered a run of 3.1 miles, a bike route of 12.3 miles and a swim course in the shape of rectangle.

Athletes had the choice of participating in the international, sprint, super sprint, para-athletes course or relay waves. The triathlon also offered a first-time wave for people interested in participating in the triathlon for the first time.

For ASU students, the triathlon was a test of their endurance, but an experience of which each was excited to be a part. For biochemistry freshman Julia Jankuski, who participated for the first time, it was an event she said she was looking forward to be part of now and in the future.

“I definitely conserved a lot of energy for it, but overall, it was a nice test run for future triathlons,” Jankuski said.

For some, the triathlon was another under their belt.

UTI sophomore and Sun Devil Triathlon team member Andre Abreu said he has participated in close to 100 triathlons, including some in Portugal. This triathlon made it more enjoyable to compete against UA participants.

“I liked the fact that there were a lot of ASU and UA (participants)," Abreu said. "There was some healthy competition. It was a lot of fun. I did some of race with a couple of UA guys. That was the best part of the race."

Intensive training goes into the preparation for triathlons, where members of the Sun Devil Triathlon team meet seven days of the week to train together to prep for a great performance. Members of the team train every day at either 6 a.m. or 6 p.m. depending on what schedule suits them.

Shelby Hannan, nutrition junior and Sun Devil Triathlon member, said she dedicates much of her own time to working out to keep her body in the proper condition for these competitions.

“I usually do light workouts in the afternoon to keep myself focused and on the right track," Hannan said. "We do train heavily in the mornings but since the heat is such a huge concern, I try to keep myself prepared for it when I do compete."
