There's a club for that: Arts clubs on campus

Whether one's hobby is snapping photos, cracking jokes or krumping, ASU has a club for it.

ASU offers a huge variety of clubs for Sun Devils who are passionate for the arts, and the beginning of the semester is a great time to join. Here's a glimpse of a few of the clubs:

Interested in dance?

For those ready to pop, lock and drop it, ASU Hip Hop Coalition is the place to be. The club welcomes all, whether you've been dancing since birth or have two left feet.

"Coming to college, I thought it would be the end of the road to my dancing career, until I found HHC," said member Rachel Rodney, who's been dancing her whole life.

Expert dancers, like Rachel, can try out for the level-two team on Wednesday, August 31 from 7:30 p.m. - 11 p.m., and callbacks are on the following Wednesday, September 7 from 8:30 p.m. - 11 p.m. Those who are selected for the upper-division team have the opportunity to participate in different dance events, like Urban Sol, which showcases many different dance groups.

"Crews from all over the Phoenix area come together to perform and express their love for hip-hop culture," Rodney said.

But, for those who can't even whip or nay-nay, the level-one team would be the best fit. Practices are held in the Sun Devil Fitness Complex, and members pay a fee for classes that vary depending on the level.

Interested in photography?

The ASU Student Photographers' Association is a place where student photographers can connect and share their passion together.

Darci Simpson, head of communications for the club, said the club holds two main events a year, The Juried Show, which exhibits work juried by a professional artist and the organization's most poplar event, the Silent Auction.

For those who aren't a master photographer and want to learn the ways of the camera, the club has topic meetings with demos of different styles and lighting tricks to make pictures look as pro as it gets.

There is a club membership fee of $15 per semester or $20 for the school year.  For those not yet sold, the meetings even include pizza at each meeting. Meetings are the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m.

Interested in classic literature and theater?

The ASU Theatre and Shakespeare Club is where all the real drama is. The group focuses on classical theater plays written by writers like Oscar Wilde, Arthur Miller and Shakespeare.

"We like to read and improvise plays to help make them more enjoyable," said club president, Courtney Marnick.

Besides reading plays by some of the greatest writers the literature world has ever known, the club participates in theatrical games that boost members' acting skills, while also opening up to the world of the written word.

"ASU is very committed to modern theater and concepts in the arts," Marnick said. "So we decided it was important to establish the roots of their art and theater by focusing on the basics of early plays and where modern theater stemmed from".

The club is a great way to transition from a high school drama troupe to a more advanced, mature theater group that dives deeper into the plays they perform.

The club meets every Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in SCOB 101.

Interested in SNL sketches?

Farce Side Comedy Hour is ASU's official sketch comedy troupe and is comprised of some of the funniest people on campus.

Director Cameron Mahai said the group has performed a comedy show every Friday in the MU for almost 30 years.

"Comedy is at the center of art and culture, simply because it's so universal," Mahai said. "Sketch comedy specifically allows us as performers to play a variety of characters and bring together an audience together".

The troupe does events other then its weekly Friday night shows.  In November, the troupe takes the show on the road to the Tucson Comedy Arts Festival to showcase its talent to a wider audience.

The group meets four days a week in order to produce a good, well thought-out shows. Writers meetings are on Mondays and Wednesdays and full rehearsals are set on Thursdays.
