A gloomy hour-and-half rain delay did not stop the ASU women’s tennis team in sweeping the season opener 7-0 against Northern Arizona University.

ASU took an early advantage in the match by securing the doubles point with wins on court two and three.

On court two, freshman Lauryn John-Baptiste and sophomore Ilze Hattingh beat NAU’s sophomore Brandy Walker and junior Eirene Granville, 6-1.

On court three, to secure ASU’s doubles’ win majority point, senior Nicole Fossa Huergo and freshman Sasa Klanecek outplayed freshman Cora-Lynn Von Dungern and freshman Ellie Millard, 6-2.

Not long after singles began, freshman Tereza Kolarova dominated on court five against Granville, achieving the Sun Devils' second point, 6-0, 6-1.

Then came shutouts on courts one, three, four and six, securing a Sun Devil win.

On court one, Hattingh came out on top with set scores of 6-2 and 6-3, beating junior Hanneke Lodewijks.

Fossa Huegro was victorious against Walker, 6-2, 6-2, on court three. Sophomore Savannah Slaysman and Klanecek on courts four and six, respectively, were triumphant in their matches against Millard and freshman Madi Moore with set scores of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1.

Although ASU had already secured the win, John-Baptiste showed relentless effort in an intense three-set battle against sophomore Chiara Tomasetti.

John-Baptiste came out victorious with a win, 6-7, 6-0 and a final tiebreaker score of 10-4. That final win achieved Sun Devil wins in all six singles’ matches.

The Sun Devils will be competing next weekend at the ITA National Kick-Off Weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
