Employment in Student Media
There’s no better way to get prepared for your career in media than to gain experience while still in school.
Student Media at ASU offers many opportunities for students interested in writing, editing, photography, cartooning, production, graphics and design, broadcasting, web development, advertising and marketing. We employ nearly 100 students a semester in all of these areas. And you don’t have to be a Journalism major to apply!
We offer competitive wages flexible schedules and a fun, collaborative working environment.
Following is a list of some of the jobs that are available. We take applications all year. You can apply by downloading an application form in your area of interest, filling it out and submitting it to us via e-mail, in person or by mail. Or you can come to the front office in the basement of Matthews Center and ask for a printed application form.

Applications are reviewed all year, although most staff positions fill up early each semester. For best results, apply before the end of the current semester for employment the following semester.
Student Media Jobs
The State Press and SPM
Positions are competitive. Students should have previous experience and a portfolio of clips. Most positions are paid.
Editing: Positions range from editor and managing editor of the daily student newspaper to copy editors and section editors for Sports, City Desk, the Opinion pages, the State Press Magazine and Photo.
Writing: Positions include beat writers to cover campus and Tempe news, sports writers, arts and entertainment writers, magazine writers and columnists. Staff writers are needed for all campuses.
Photography: Staff photographers are needed for the Tempe campus.
Cartoonists: Positions are available for editorial cartoons and comic strips.

The ASU Web Devil
The Web Devil is The State Press on-line, plus a lot more. This is a great way to get started if you don’t have a lot of experience. Only editing positions are paid staff positions; others may be paid on a freelance basis.
Editing: Positions consist of Web Devil editor and two assistants who develop content for the site and post articles.
Writers, photographers, videographers, cartoonists and others are needed to contribute original content for the site.

Sun Devil Television, Channel 2
Don’t wait until you’re a senior to get on-air or production experience. Freshmen are welcome as volunteers; more experienced students can obtain paid staff positions in leadership roles. Channel 2 programs are broadcast via closed-circuit cable to all residence halls, the Memorial Union and the Student Recreation Center.
Leadership roles include general manager, station manager, promotions director, news director and production editor. Positions are paid.
Volunteer positions are available for producers who develop their own television shows, on-air talent, reporters, videographers and technicians.

Advertising
You’ll earn an hourly wage and commission on the ads you sell as well as gain invaluable experience in a real-world environment. Training program and mentoring available.
Student Advertising Manager: Sells advertising as well as oversees all student sales representatives and develops programs for clients. Works closely with a professional advertising manager.
Student sales representatives: Sells advertising on and off campus, developing new clientele and working with established clients. Customer service is important!
Marketing Manager: Helps market Student Media products on and off campus. Plans and coordinates events, develops outreach programs and helps distribute products.
Advertising
Production
You can gain valuable experience producing ads, special products and the daily student newspaper. Day-time and night-time positions available. Software experience required.
Advertising production: Works with sales representatives to design and expedite the placement of advertisements in the newspaper, special products and on-line. Mostly day-time hours.
Newspaper production: Does page make-up and design for the front page and inside pages of the newspaper and the State Press magazine. Mostly evening hours.

State Press Special Sections
The State Press special sections staff produces a dozen special sections each year, ranging from a guide to Homecoming to sections on careers, apartments and spring break.
Editor: Responsible for story development, writing and editing as well as visual quality of all special sections. This is a paid student staff position.
Writers and photographers. Contribute articles and photographs around special section themes. Pay is per article or photo published.
