Life as a Devils' Advocate

Devils' Advocate is an organization where students can give tour guides to potential students visiting ASU. Kacey Cavanagh has found a passion in giving tours. Music: "Patent Doll" by Freedom Trail Studio from YouTube Audio Library Kacey Cavanagh - Nursing Sophomore: Hi, my name is Kacey, and I'm a sophomore nursing student here at Arizona State University, and I'm the Vice President of Downtown Devils' Advocates. Kacey has found a passion for showing potential students around the downtown Phoenix campus. Kacey knew that she wanted to be a tour guide before she was even a student. Cavanagh: When I moved in I was able to contact my tour guide from that year and sign up then and there as well. She tries to do as many tours as possible. Kacey gives special tours, like this one, where high schoolers get to visit ASU. Devils' Advocates allows current students to get to know their school better, along with making new friends. Cavanagh: There's a lot of favorite things for me, but I would say I love when the parents laugh at my jokes because it's more parents laughing at my jokes than students. But, really more than anything, it's going to be when the students come back the next year and say that I was their tour guide or that I was the deciding factor for them to coming to Arizona State. She hopes to be involved for as long as she can. Reach the reporter at golivera@asu.edu or follow @gabynolivera on Twitter. Like State Press on Facebook and follow @statepress on Twitter.

Thousands of high school students get a history lesson from 'Hamilton' the musical

EduHam, an educational "Hamilton" program, brought nearly 2,700 students from 43 Title I high schools to watch a matinee performance of the musical at ASU Gammage. A few high schoolers were able to perform on the "Hamilton" stage and participate in a Q and A session with the cast.  Marcella Baietto - Reporter:  ASU Gammage welcomed thousands of students and teachers from more than 40 Title I high schools as part of an educational "Hamilton" program called EduHam. Colleen Jennings-Roggensack - ASU Vice President for Cultural Affairs: ASU Gammage has long brought students to the theater. We think it's very important. And for many students this will be their first experience. Can you imagine your first theater experience being "Hamilton"? Baietto:  And that's exactly what Rodrigo Sevilla was able to experience. Sevilla, along with his classmates got to watch a matinee performance of "Hamilton." Rodrigo Sevilla - Maryvale High School Junior: It's a good experience to have because I've never been to a big theater before.   Baietto:  Sevilla was also one of the few students chosen to perform on the "Hamilton" stage.   Sevilla: I feel excited and special since they chose me from all the people that tried.  Baietto:  Cast members of the musical 'Hamilton' participated in a Q and A with students and were blown away by the performances.  Yvette Lu - "Hamilton" Cast Member: I can't imagine having done that in high school and how much they're going to grow from doing that. Like there's so much talent and, also just a lot of really great minds with a lot of like progressive ideas which is really exciting.  Dorcas Leung - "Hamilton" Cast Member: You have to remember that the Founding Fathers, as dusty as they seem in school, were human beings. They had affairs, they had personal relationships with people, they were just like us in some ways. I think what's really interesting about telling this story is that there are themes that are still applicable to us today.     Baietto:  Reporting for the State Press, I am Marcella Baietto.  Reach the videographer at mmbaiett@asu.edu or follow @marcellabaietto on Twitter. UC Berkeley won the overall competition against UC Irvine, while ASU beat the Wildcats in an exhibition match. Music: "Palmtree" by The Brothers Records from YouTube Audio Library Sameer Zahir - Computer Information Systems Junior: I think it's just infrastructure. Our infrastructure is a little bit more experienced compared to theirs. And we have a lot more students at Arizona State University. On top of that, it's a big campus so you can get a good player. Jacob Copley - Finance Sophomore: There's a lot of talent here. I think we need to just work on our teamwork more. I feel like that like individually everyone on ASU is really strong, but like we really need to like take it to the next level. We need to make sure we are all always on the same page and like bring that teamwork to the next level. Reach the reporter at qwang147@asu.edu or follow @HoYo_CC on Twitter.
