Games aren’t the only thing the ASU football team is losing these days.
Coach Dennis Erickson announced Tuesday that redshirt freshman Matt Hustad will have reconstructive surgery on his injured knee and miss the rest of the season.
“That [knee] is just not stable, so we don’t want to take any chances,” Erickson said.
After redshirting in 2007, Hustad injured his knee during training camp and did not see the field this season.
He returned to practice during the team’s first bye week and battled with junior Tom Njunge for the starting right tackle spot, but Njunge won the job for ASU’s game against Cal on Oct. 4.
The Sun Devils started this week’s practice with some reshuffling along the offensive front.
Junior offensive lineman Shawn Lauvao practiced at right tackle, while redshirt freshman Adam Tello moved inside to left guard.
“That’s probably where he really belongs,” Erickson said of Tello’s move to guard. “That’s where he played in high school. From what I saw, it looked like he did some pretty good things [during Tuesday’s practice].”
Starting right guard Paul Fanaika sat out of Tuesday’s practice after suffering a leg injury late in Saturday’s loss to USC.
Erickson said the senior should be ready for ASU’s next game against Oregon on Oct. 25.
Injury woes deplete secondary
After losing sophomore safety Max Tabach for the remainder of the season to a torn medial collateral ligament, Erickson said Tuesday that freshman safety Clint Floyd will be out of the lineup for two to four weeks.
Erickson said Floyd suffered a lacerated kidney during the USC contest.
Floyd has been the primary backup to senior safety Rodney Cox and has played in all six of ASU’s games this season.
Losses in the secondary have forced the Sun Devil coaching staff to shift personnel.
On Tuesday, junior Ryan McFoy, who has spent this season at linebacker, practiced at safety.
McFoy played at safety during his first two seasons before making the switch to linebacker during this season’s training camp.
Erickson said that sophomore safety Mike Callaghan may also see more time at the position due to Floyd’s absence.
Carpenter not practicing
Senior quarterback Rudy Carpenter will not practice this week.
Erickson said that Carpenter, who had a protective boot on his injured left ankle on Tuesday, will be re-evaluated on Sunday.
On Tuesday, junior Danny Sullivan and redshirt freshman Samson Szacaksy both took snaps with the first team.
Freshman long snapper Thomas Ohmart sat out Tuesday’s workout with a sling over his shoulder, but Erickson said Ohmart will be ready for the team’s game against Oregon.
