With a cross-country road trip just completed and a highly anticipated nonconference showdown with a top-10 opponent less than 48 hours away, the ASU women’s basketball team could have fallen victim to the infamous trap game against Yale on Thursday night.

That didn’t happen.

Despite a sloppy start and 28 turnovers, the No. 14 Sun Devils rolled over the Bulldogs 82-46 at the Lee Amphitheater in New Haven, Conn., setting up a contest with No. 9 Xavier in Cincinnati on Saturday that was already garnering national buzz.

“In our evaluation, we probably only played about 10 minutes of really good basketball,” ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne said. “But it just goes to show you how good this team could possibly be at the end of the day.”

ASU used a balanced scoring attack and a dominant performance on the glass to beat a Yale squad that was 2-0 for the first time since the 1998-1999 season. The Sun Devils (2-0) had four players score in double figures and outrebounded the Bulldogs 61-21.

“We have to make up for our lack of execution and just getting to know each other and even a little bit of inconsistency on defense by hopefully just getting on the boards,” Turher Thorne said. “I really thought that was just the difference in the game, and we just need to keep doing that.”

After the score was tied 2-2 in the opening minutes, a layup by ASU sophomore wing Kimberly Brandon at the 11:52 mark of the first half capped a 14-0 run that allowed the Sun Devils to take control of the game early.

The Sun Devils never led by less than 13 points after that, and a layup by junior forward Becca Tobin ignited an 18-3 spurt midway through the second half that gave ASU a 63-32 lead with 7:46 left in the contest.

Tobin led all scorers and narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, and redshirt freshman forward Janae Fulcher recorded her first career double-double by notching 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Earl set a career high with 12 points in her first action of the season after missing the Sun Devils’ opener against South Dakota State with a foot injury, while Brandon added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

“We’ve got a lot of weapons,” Turner Thorne said. “On any given day, even when we run plays, depending on the flow of the game, we literally could have anyone from [option] two through [option] five getting the call.”

Yale shot just 24 percent from the field and did not have any players reach double figures in points. Sophomore forward Michelle Cashen, who was averaging a double-double coming into Thursday’s contest, was held to just four points and four rebounds.
