Non-Required Reading: Seeing ‘Red’

So I saw the Bruce Willis-John Malkovich-Helen Mirren-Morgan Freeman-Ernest Borgnine-Richard Dreyfuss epic “Red” yesterday. And it was okay. But here I go on another rant about misusing the source material. Let’s do this.

Quick explanation for those of you uninformed. “Red” is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. It actually first came out in single comics form, but whatever. It’s very good, but sat in development as a movie for quite a while.

To start it all off, I did enjoy “Red.” It was a doofy action movie with plenty of cool fight scenes. It’s not gonna win any awards any time soon, but it doesn’t expect to. A lot of the fights are pretty sweet too watch. It’s a testosterone fest, and it works to accomplish its mission.

Basic Plot Summary! (And an Exclamation Point means it’s important). Bruce Willis plays Frank Moses, a retired CIA agent. He is currently living the retired life, and not especially enjoying it. Then the CIA decides to take care of Moses, for undisclosed reason, and he has to get his group back together to figure out what’s going on.

Non-Required Reading: The Hype Machine

By October 3, 2010 at 12:28 am

Folks, there’s no hiding the fact that I’m pretty full of myself. But it’s hard not to be when you’re this awesome. However, I can’t even compare to the levels of notoriety and “Pay attention to me!” style that Mark Millar exhumes.

Quick background. Mark Millar used to write for DC Comics. He worked with Grant Morrison on the Flash, and basically built his career before jumping over to Marvel. At Marvel, he worked on the Ultimates, and Ultimate X-men which jettisoned his life into one of the top-tier comic creators.

Then Mark Millar went crazy. (In terms of production, of course, no slander or libel to see here folks!)

He created “Millarworld” a series of comics all written by him for different comic companies. This led to the creation of “Wanted” (which eventually led to a movie). From there Millar would write “Enemy of the State,” a Wolverine story, the beginning of “Marvel Knights Spider-Man,” and took writing duties on one of the largest events in comics history, “Civil War.”

From there, Mark Millar went even more crazy. (Again in terms of productivity of movies and hype, so still no libel or slander. Attorneys put your phones down!)

Non-Required Reading: Avengers Assemble!

By September 26, 2010 at 12:26 am

So by now, you’ve probably all heard several superhero names you don’t know anything about.

Don’t worry folks, Marvel Studios has a plan. What started with the success of “Iron Man,” has now branched into Hulk, Thor and Captain America movies.

But what does this mean for you? Well, I’d say a lot.

Over the next couple summers we will see an entire Marvel mythos develop and potentially destroy at the box office. The plan is to put all of these movies together with their casts, and put them into one super-blockbuster movie, “The Avengers.”

Do you people get what I’m saying? We could have four serious summer blockbuster movies with A-list stars all culminate in one super-movie.

How I Almost Got Killed by Thomas Jane

By September 12, 2010 at 10:28 pm

San Diego Comic-Con. To some it’s a Mecca; to some it’s a big question mark; to some it’s an excuse to spend excessive amounts of money. For me, it’s all of those things wrapped in a giant expensive summer trip ball. I’ve gone three years in a row now, and every time is a completely new experience. Sometimes it ends in a near death experience.

Cut to 2009: our spry young blogger is just a spry young college kid wasting his summer away at SDCC. I had gone with three others: my sister, her friend and my friend Alex. Alex had decided to go off to the beach half way through the day, and my sister and her friend went off to do other nerd related activities, so I was on my own.

The day was coming to a close, so I was headed the long walk back to my hotel room. As I walked the great hall of the convention center, I could see one man swaggering by.

It’s impossible to explain just how Thomas “The Punisher” Jane walked that day, but swagger is the best verb I can come up with. He bounced along with his blue-lens glasses and I decided to try to make an approach.

“Excuse me,” I tried politely. I swear I didn’t jump the guy; I just wanted a quick picture so I could tell my friends and have proof.

In Defense of ‘Daredevil’

By September 12, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Let’s start this from the top. The year was 2003. Our spry young blogger was just an emo doofy middle schooler. And “Daredevil” had finally come to theatres.

I went to the old-school Harkins Christown Theatres (does anyone else remember that place?) with two friends of mine and sat through what I thought was a fun and enjoyable action movie.

That’s right folks. I really enjoyed “Daredevil.” The Ben Affleck one. With Jennifer Garner. It hurts me to think I enjoyed it.

Whenever I say something about enjoying it, a lot of people seem to look at me with disgust. Apparently it’s my “that” movie — the one that I enjoy even though no one else does.
