Other than Ramen: Brain Food

By May 1, 2011 at 10:02 am

The end of classes means one thing—finals. This time around, fuel your brain with these five foods that will keep your mind in tip-top shape. Along with plenty of sleep (avoid the all-night cramming) and hydration from H2O, these foods will help you be prepared to pass your finals with flying colors.

Blueberries

BBCGoodFood.com’s article “10 things to boost your brainpower” said that this fruit works wonders for your brain. “Research from Tufts University in the United States and published in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that blueberry extract can improve short-term memory loss.” Toss these berries in a bowl of cereal or in a yogurt parfait, your body will be loaded with antioxidants and ready to focus during your tests.

Other than Ramen: Earth Day Every Day

By April 27, 2011 at 12:01 am

Happy Belated Earth Day, Other than Ramen readers! Earth Day was Friday,  but this day really left an impact on me, so I decided to write a little follow-up reflection.

It seems to me that every year our society as a whole becomes more and more driven to develop sustainable habits and conserve our planet. Earth Day was a day especially devoted to celebrating these accomplishments toward eco-friendliness, but my question is: shouldn’t we being celebrate Earth Day everyday?

As individuals, we have a responsibility to take care of Mother Earth and we can start doing so right in our everyday college lives.

Let’s celebrate Earth Day everyday buy eating locally grown food! Photo courtesy of Mark W. Lipczynski/The Arizona Republic

Many ASU students are already incorporating “green” tactics like riding the light rail and biking to class, but I’d like to propose some ways for us be “green” in our eating.

Other than Ramen: Easter Egg Sandwiches

By April 24, 2011 at 9:29 am

An eggstra-delicious sandwich is calling your name! Photo courtesy of thepioneerwoman.com.

Remember when we were kids and it was part of the tradition to dye Easter eggs with family? My cousins and I would go all out with stickers, glitter and tie-dye in competition for the prettiest egg.

It was always a sad moment when the beautiful, hand crafted shells of the hard boiled eggs would be broken in order to make deviled eggs or egg salad. From the devastating crack sound of the shell, it was downhill.

Thankfully, although the special artwork was destroyed, the hard boiled eggs made for a delicious snack!

In honor of the Easter celebrations taking place today, try out this recipe for an easy Egg Salad Sandwich made with five ingredients in about five minutes.

Other than Ramen: Pumpkin Squash Ravioli Review

By April 20, 2011 at 12:01 am

This week, I continued my quest to find the most delicious microwave meals for college students.

While roaming the aisles of the freezer section at the grocery store, the Healthy Choice All Natural Entrees stood out to me.

The tagline, “Real food. No Preservatives.” sounded intriguing and contradicted my stereotype of microwave meals filled with strange preservatives and fake ingredients.

The thought of Pumpkin Squash Ravioli made my taste buds get very excited, especially when the description read, “Pumpkin filled ravioli with a butter-sage sauce, asparagus and butternut squash.” (Yum!) So I decided to try this one in hopes that the flavors would meet my expectation.

Other than Ramen: English Muffin Pizza

By April 17, 2011 at 12:01 am

The perfect size for a perfect snack. Photo courtesy of RealMomKitchen.com.

It’s not delivery and it’s not DiGorgnio… It’s English muffin pizza!

Yep, that’s right. No need to fuss with buying your own pizza dough or even making frozen pizzas in the oven. This week’s recipe is for a pizza made on toasted English muffins.

Perfect for lunch or a late night snack, these mini pizzas are easy to make and only requires a few simple, inexpensive ingredients that you might even have in your pantry already.

Use your creativity by dressing up this snack with your favorite pizza toppings like veggies, ham and pineapple, or go the classic route with shredded cheese.

Other than Ramen: The Great Debate

By April 13, 2011 at 12:01 am

Which do you choose: Red Vines or Twizzlers? Everyone has their favorite, but I’m wondering when and why this great debate started.

Some people claim Red Vines are artificial tasting, others say Twizzlers taste like plastic. What’s the consensus?

I took a poll of my statistics class to determine whether they preferred Twizzlers or Red Vines. Out of the 31 people polled, 20 chose Red Vines and the others chose Twizzlers, making Red Vines the winner.

Who is the winner? Photo courtesy of Secondratesnacks.com.

Red Vines seem to be associated with the West Coast because they are made in California and Twizzlers are associated with the East because they are made in Tennessee. That could be a generalization, though. Which one did you grow up with?

Other than Ramen: Easy Raspberry Lemonade

By April 10, 2011 at 10:03 am

When life hands you lemons... Photo by Gabriela Rodiles.

The weather is heating up, the pool is getting warmer, and there are only a few weeks of school left (not that I’m counting or anything)! Looks like summer is right around the corner. Start planning the menu for pool parties and afternoon barbeques with friends, and don’t forget to include this Easy Raspberry Lemonade.

You can take the flavor (and the wow-factor) of this refreshing drink to the next level by adding in some frozen raspberries, some lime juice, or (if appropriate) another secret “ingredient.”

I did a little research on my favorite recipe website, allrecipes.com, and found a great and inexpensive recipe for you to try. Because this is made with raspberry lemonade concentrate, which you can find in the freezer section of the grocery store, you won’t have to hand squeeze tons of lemons.

Your friends will be so impressed when you tell them you made this yourself. But, they never have to know how easy it was to make!

Other than Ramen: “Leggo my Eggo!”

By April 6, 2011 at 12:01 am

This shirt is calling my name. Photos courtesy of Teesforall.com.

The discussion board on Yelp.com for “Creative Things to Do with Waffles” was entertaining to say the least. Minus the…hmm…unique suggestions like “waffle origami,” I did get some great ideas of how to spice up typical frozen waffles with everyday ingredients.

Butter and maple syrup are always a classic topping, but when you’re in the mood for something fun and fresh, try out one of these four ideas.

If your roommate starts eyeing your breakfast, you might even need to exclaim the unforgettable tagline, “Leggo my Eggo!”

Remember the investment groceries I blogged about earlier this semester,  peanut butter, jelly, caramel, Nutella, ice cream, and now waffles are all staple grocery items that will last for months without you having to worry about an expiration date. These options interchange well with fruit and yogurt, which will only last a week or so!
