  • Maroon and Gamer: I choose you

Vote. Vote for your favorites. Vote for those whose ideals match yours. Vote for the guy who you think is better than the other guy. Just Vote!

‘Tis the season gamers and true believers. Come Nov. 9, the American people will be choosing who among the candidates will run this fantastic country of ours. But I’m here to remind you all that voting exists in the gaming industry as well in a participatory culture sort of fashion.

On Oct. 15, it was revealed by IGN that Deep Silver (developers of Dead Island 2011) would give “fans the option to choose everything from pillowcases to bobbleheads to keychains, with plenty of fun options in between.” see more

  • Art Murmur: Cameo Pumpkin DIY

Are you sick of getting your hands full of orange goop and slippery seeds every late October? Carving a jack-o-lantern can literally be a pain when those fluids start stinging the invisible cuts on your hands. But making a festive pumpkin for this Halloween is easier than you think.

For this project, we will be creating a skeleton cameo that will be pasted to the face of the pumpkin.

  • Pitchfork Sports: Avoiding heartbreak

The ASU men’s lacrosse team came so close last year.

That statement has become repetitive to the fans and members of the team.

Being the runner-up for the 2010 and 2011 seasons perfectly describes how close the team is. A loss in the semi-finals of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association against Cal Poly, was the last action the team has seen. see more

  • The Campus Closet: How to speed up your morning routine

If you’re like me, hitting the snooze button on your alarm three or more times when you wake up and the phrase “10 more minutes” has become apart of your morning routine. Whatever happened to birds chirping, fresh new air and a day full of new possibilities to get you excited to get out of bed? Coffee has become my savior, but some days it is just not enough.

Imagine if you could add 15 more minutes to your sleep and actually have a chance to enjoy this time — and still get as much done.

Here are some tips and tricks to make the process of getting ready in the morning much more relaxed and enjoyable, so you have more time for you and maybe even more shut eye: see more

  • Tech Spec: Get the picture?

As Halloween season approaches, so do the memories: dressing up and going to costume parties, visiting haunted houses and going trick-or-treating. If you are like me, capturing the moment is just as important as experiencing it.

Many people nowadays rely on the camera in their smart devices to get that photo of their best friend dressed up in their ridiculous getup. But the problem is getting the photo just right; with the dark lighting and people constantly on the move, getting it right on the first try is difficult. But it is possible, and here’s how:

  • Art Murmur: Tempe Tardeada

People eagerly lined up to wash their hands, ready to roll globs of dough into tortillas, couples danced to Latin music and children devoured raspados (snow cones). Spectators chowed down on authentic tacos de carne asada — not the pseudo-Mexican stuff a particular food chain would have you enjoy.

As for me: I sat in the ray of the hot sun, baby ants munching on my sandal-clad feet.

Many sights were seen and foods were eaten at last Sunday’s Tempe Tardeada, a diverse celebration of Hispanic culture held at the Tempe Community Complex. The annual event commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month. see more

  • Maroon and Gamer: Play it again, game

Even thought this is a strictly-based Arizona State University publication, I think everyone should check out Ohio State University’s half-time show.

Seen here, OSU’s tribute to video games is amazing and should leave everyone with shivers down their spine. Even if you’re not up to date with all things video game, it’s a marvel of choreography and composition. Then I got to thinking, there are a lot of video game tunes and music that are so iconic and really complement the game-play in ways that we don’t even think of.

Video game music has come a long way from the cacophony that existed in the Atari and 8-bit era. Hans Zimmer, who scored The Dark Knight trilogy, has scored Crysis 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Clint Mansell, who scored Black Swan, did the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack. Even Sir Paul McCartney has joined Bungie, developers of the Halo franchise, in creating the music for their upcoming game. see more

  • Pitchfork Sports: Diablos get ready for season

As the weather cools off and the summer fades, a popular backyard sport becomes real as the ASU Ultimate Frisbee team tries to make their way back to the national spotlight.

Ultimate is the name of the game for these high-flying athletes.

If you’re not familiar with the game, think football but with a flying disk replacing the pigskin. There is no running with the Frisbee, so defenses expect the pass on every play. The game is played on a football field, giving the players 100 yards of open field to catch the soaring disk. see more

  • The Campus Closet: DIY last-minute Halloween costumes

It’s crazy to think it’s already half way through October and the fall semester. Time seems to be flying by, and there are only two more weekends until Oct. 31, Halloween. Mysterious masks always catch the eyes of others. Photo by Gabrielle Nelson.

Costume parties are starting up this weekend, and if you’re like me everything you do is last minute.

Lucky for you, All Hallows Eve is my favorite holiday, and dressing up is my expertise. Whats better than getting to dress like your alter ego for a night? see more

  • Tech Spec: The Cost of College

College students spend money; it is a necessary evil in the world of penny pinching. This pain in the wallet may grow, as there are talks about an increase in the “technology fee” that students already pay.

This fee, which is currently set at $50, would be increased (supposedly to $55) to better cover the costs of ASU’s technological needs, like the servers and Blackboard. Fees go toward updating ASU’s server and Blackboard. Photo by Courtland Jeffrey.

According to ASU’s website, the technology fee that students are required to pay “partially covers the cost of ASU’s voice and data network infrastructure.” In other words, this fee covers most of our technological needs on campus. Upon hearing this, I asked myself, why should ASU’s technology fees rise? see more
