Get Fresh: The Red Cups are Back

By November 8, 2010 at 12:01 am

Courtesy Starbucks.

As a college freshman, it is essential to have my daily dose of coffee in order to function. This time of year is especially the best to break away from my usual grande caramel macchiato and start my days with a coffee shop’s specialty seasonal drinks.

Starbucks is by far the best coffee shop for seasonal drinks. Starbucks starts with fall-like drinks, with pumpkin and Thanksgiving flavors, then makes its way to winter drinks with the taste of Christmas in every sip. The pumpkin spice and gingerbread lattes are basically like drinking an entire cup of holiday fun. As corny as that might sound, it is definitely an entire experience of its own. Starbucks prepares its customers for Christmas before it is even December, or better yet Thanksgiving. With their red and white wintery cups, Starbucks offers the Christmas/winter feeling in the peppermint mocha, peppermint white chocolate mocha, toffee nut latte, dark cherry mocha and gingerbread latte.

Get Fresh: Ultimate College Delivery

By November 1, 2010 at 12:03 am

A new kind of delivery. Photo by Marlee Bever.

Many of you probably know of the typical delivery-food services on campus — Dominos, Jimmy Johns, Hungry Howies, or Pita Pit. However, there are more delivery options than you may think. How about a toothpaste-delivery service for you? Or maybe you fall into the movie-necessity category. Lucky for you, there is a 48-hour delivery service for the Tempe campus called Devil Dash.

Many of us will experience late nights in college, and if you haven’t, don’t worry — you will. Instead of going to the POD markets on campus or a gas station to stock up on energy drinks and 5-hour energy shots for the long nights, you can call up Devil Dash and order one of their “Late Night Study Packs” for a fee. This late-night snack pack will meet all of your needs, such as Cheez-Its, No Doz (which will not let you fall asleep), a Monster energy drink — either lo-carb or normal — Red Bull with a sugar free option, and of course, a 5-Hour Energy.

Get Fresh: Halloween’s Innocence Lost

By October 25, 2010 at 12:01 am

The old days of Halloween fun. Photo by Marlee Bever.

It’s hard to remember the days when Halloween costumes did not involve heels — when it was rare for stomachs to even show and when a princess costume actually included fabric. But as soon as high school hit, we all dropped our innocent pillowcase trick-or-treating, transforming our full-length costumes into Halloween attire that appears overly skimpy and ten sizes too small.

Halloween costumes are no longer about dressing as the cutest witch or hippie flower child, but about dressing as the sexiest nurse or vampire. Halloween costume stores even have a separate costume section specifically for “Sexy Costumes.”

Get Fresh: Midterm Madness

By October 18, 2010 at 12:01 am

Surviving midterms. Photo by Marlee Bever.

My eyes feel like they are going to fall out of my head, and I can barely function in my everyday life. This is the horrible case of over-tired college student staying up too late to study for a test that they have everyday. This is a very common disease and can affect each and every one of you, if you’re not careful.

With the insane amount of midterms that will be hitting all of us in the next couple of weeks, it is important that we are prepared for the ride.

Get Fresh: It’s No Winter Wonderland

By October 11, 2010 at 12:02 am

Jean shorts and Ugg boots... Ugh. Photo by Marlee Bever.

Listen up, freshmen. You may have noticed something different about the weather when you walk outside. It no longer melts the skin off your body, and no longer makes you want to change your outfit five different times in one day. Because Arizona weather can be a bit bipolar around this time of year, I’m here to help guide you on the proper dress for Arizona’s “fall” and “winter” seasons.

First and foremost, those of you who are out-of-state freshmen might as well send home those winter snow boots and heavy jackets because you will definitely stick out like a sore thumb here. You may even want to keep your flip-flops and shorts around, which can be a weird concept to get used to.

Get Fresh: Marquee Virginity

By October 4, 2010 at 12:41 am

Sara Bareilles takes the stage. Photo by Marlee Bever.

I decided to take a step away from my usual on-campus adventures and write about the world outside of ASU, or really just five minutes away. In all the years I have lived in Arizona, I had yet to go to a concert at the Marquee Theatre. But this last week I finally lost my Marquee virginity.

While browsing online I decided to be spontaneous and look at upcoming concerts at the Marquee. I started clicking on random dates hoping to get something worthwhile, when finally I stumbled upon a date for my favorite artist, Sara Bareilles. And when I saw that the tickets were only $20 — compared to other $200-and-up concert tickets — I purchased them that very moment.

Residence halls are decorated with gold and maroon fever, stampedes through campus become a common site and tailgating starts several hours before the game. The time has finally come for Sun Devil football season.

Game Days are about more than the actual game itself. There are week-long events that will prepare and train you for the games themselves.

‘Crash Into Me’

I have counted approximately 21 scrapes and bruises on my legs, possibly more. I have been through many (let’s just say) ups and downs with my new campus vehicle, the beach cruiser.

Getting around on some type of wheel is almost essential on the Tempe campus. I decided to leave and retire my hand-me-down van at home and buy a bicycle for my campus journeys.
