In the Pac-12, many volleyball players performed above and beyond in one of the toughest conferences in the country.

As the season draws to a close, it is time to reflect on some athletes that had incredible performances on the court this season.

In the Pac-12, many volleyball players from many different teams performed above and beyond for their schools in one of the toughest conferences in the country.

It is only customary to honor such players with awards for their performances.

Comeback player of the year: Ashley Kastl (Sophomore, Outside Hitter, ASU)

One of the most intriguing stories this season was Kastl’s return to the court.

Kastl suffered a devastating and confounding hand injury her sophomore year. The injury took time to heal and Kastl had to see many different specialists to diagnose the injury. It was feared that her career at ASU was in jeopardy.

After redshirting her sophomore year and working to get her hand back in playing condition, Kastl came into the 2011 season ready to go.

Coach Jason Watson said Kastl was one of the players he was most impressed with during training camp. Her work ethic and drive caused her to have an impressive season.

Kastl finished the season leading the Sun Devils and ranked 8th in the Pac-12 with 424 kills. That is an average of 3.82 per set.

Kastl said she was just grateful to have an opportunity to play.

“I thank God that he allowed me to be able to play again,” Kastl said. “Last year was just really, really difficult and I am very thankful to have the opportunity to play here, play at Arizona State and just compete.”

That fact that she was able to return after the injury and end up leading her team offensively makes her the comeback player of the year.

Coach of the year: Beth Luaniere (Utah)

Changing conferences is not easy.

The Utah Utes along with the Colorado Buffaloes changed conferences to make the Pac-12 a stronger football conference.

Along with the football team, the other collegiate athletic programs moved as well.

The Utah volleyball team had to change from the small Mountain West Conference to the Pac-12. The Pac-12 finished with six ranked teams. The Mountain West did not have any.

Making that transition was tough for Luaniere and the Utes, but she rose to the occasion and the Utes had a successful inaugural Pac-12 season.

The Utes finished with an 11-20 record and won six Pac-12 games including an upset over then No. 16 Oregon.

Luaniere made a nice transition to the Pac-12. Look for the Utes to be a force in the conference in the coming years.

Offensive player of the year: Meagan Ganzer (Senior, Outside Hitter, Washington State)

Meagan Ganzer is a clear-cut winner for this award.

She led the Pac-12 in kills with 595 and in points averaging 5.38 a set.

The Cougars did not have one of the best records in the Pac-12 at 12-20, but the fact that Ganzer was the team’s main source of offensive production is reason enough to honor her.

Anytime the ball was set in a Cougars match, it was probably going to Ganzer. Teams had to build their strategy around one player, which is interesting to see in volleyball.

Ganzer graduates this year and one of the more dominant players in Pac-12 history.

Front line defensive player of the year: Carly Wopat (Sophomore, Middle Back, Stanford)

At 6’2”, Wopat is a presence in the middle for the Cardinal.

Wopat had her own block party every match for Stanford.

She finished the year leading the Pac-12 with 184 total blocks, which is an almost an average of two blocks per set. She also recorded seven blocks on her own.

With the help of Wopat Stanford was one of the more dominant defensive teams in the conference. The Cardinal led in blocks, digs and their opponent hitting percentage ranked third at .170.

It was hard to create any offense against the Cardinal. A main reason for that was because Wopat stationed in the middle.

Back line defensive player of the year: Stephanie Preach (Sophomore, Libero, ASU)

With all healthy ASU front line players measuring 6’2” and under, there is a lot of pressure on the back line to defend.

In Preach’s second year at ASU, she stepped up to the challenge.

Preach led the Pac-12 in digs with 610 this season. She was the only Sun Devil to lead a statistical category in the Pac-12.

ASU averaged only 2.12 blocks per set this season. A lot of backs would come to the back row and Preach made some incredible plays this season to defend the court.

Preach is just a sophomore and she is already positioned herself as one of the top liberos in the conference.

Setter of the year: Kendall Bateman (Senior, Setter, USC)

Setter is probably one of the most unselfish positions in sports. Everything you do is to set up your teammates.

No one did a better job of setting up her teammates than Bateman with 1222 assists this season.

Bateman and the Pac-12 champion Trojans posted the best offensive hitting percentage at .296.

Also due to Bateman’s sets, two Trojans were top conference scorers this season. Senior middle blocker Lauren Williams had the conference best .400 hitting percentage and senior outside hitter Alex Jupiter was fourth in the conference with 432 kills.

Freshman of the year: Krista Vansant (Freshman, Outside Hitter, Washington)

Freshman Krista Vansant burst on to the scene for the No. 11 Huskies.

She led her team in kills with 376 as a freshman and was ranked 9th in the Pac-12. No other freshman was in the top 10.

Since she was such an intricate part of the Huskies offense early in her career, her impact on the Pac-12 should only increase as her career continues.

It was not a storybook beginning, but it did have a nice ending.

The 2011 season did not go as the ASU volleyball team planned. But the incredible determination and drive showed during the year when the Sun Devils kept fighting and turned the season around near the end.

“Clearly it wasn’t the season that we all envisioned,” coach Jason Watson said. “But we did manage to end better than we started.”

Entering into the 2011 season, the ASU volleyball team had high hopes. Like most teams entering a new season, there is a lot of optimism at the beginning of the year.

In Watson’s fourth year, the goal was simple across the board for the team. Both the coaches and players wanted to qualify for the NCAA Tournament at the end of the year.

With a 9-22 record, the goal was out of reach for the Sun Devils and their season ended earlier than planned.

At the beginning of the year, the team won two out of three games at home. Then the Sun Devils hit the road, embarking on tough non-conference tournament schedule.

The Sun Devils faced two ranked teams in non-conference play. They were away from Tempe for over a month and finished their non-conference with a 4-9 record.

Watson said that next season there will be more non-conference games scheduled and he hopes the team can stay home more next season.

“Nobody wants to come here, they all want us to come there,” Watson said. “We are negotiating some stuff and see if we can get some (home games).”

ASU then started their conference season in the Pac-12. The Pac-12 is no doubt one of the best conferences in women’s volleyball, with seven teams competing in the NCAA tournament and six teams finishing ranked in the top 15 schools in the country.

The young ASU team struggled in the Pac-12 play. They did not win their first Pac-12 match until nine matches into conference play.

When most teams would pack it in and forget about the rest of the season, the Sun Devils continued to work.

The Sun Devils continued to compete in the Pac-12 conference and finished the year winning four straight matches at home.

Redshirt sophomore Ashley Kastl said the struggles the team faced in the beginning helped them grow stronger.

“As a group the things you go through and the obstacles you face together when you overcome them it builds character,” Kastl said. “Everyone from this team, from this year, from this season has definitely come out a lot stronger than we started.”

The Sun Devils definitely improved and ended the season on a high note. The team now looks to the future and the feeling is optimistic.

Freshman outside hitter Nora Tuioti-Mariner hopes that the same will continue next season.

“We started off kind of rocky but we ended on a high note,” Tuioti-Mariner said. “Hopefully that momentum will carry on to the next season.”

Tuioti-Mariner was voted honorable mention for the Pac-12 all-freshman team. Tuioti-Mariner and Kastl both return for the Sun Devils next year.

Other starting players, such as, sophomore libero Stephanie Preach, junior middle blocker Erica Wilson and freshman setter Shannan McCready return to the lineup next year as well.

Watson also brings in a strong recruiting class next season. Allison Palmer from Laguna Beach, Calif. will challenge McCready at the setter position next season.

Macey Gardner from Gilbert High School will bring some offensive power to the left outside hitter position.

Six-foot-four-inch middle blocker Mercedes Binns is working to be academically eligible next semester.

With the new recruits and so many players returning Watson is excited for the spring.

“There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle and there are a lot pieces coming in to support that,” Watson said. “We are really enthused, we are really excited about the direction it’s going.”

The ASU volleyball team will certainly miss their seniors’ presence next year.

ASU senior Sonja Markanovich prepares for a set during the Sun Devils’ loss to Stanford on Oct. 22.
Bittersweet.

That was the word that senior outside hitter Malia Bachynski and senior middle blocker Sonja Markanovich used many times to describe their emotions as their ASU volleyball careers come to an end.

“It’s bittersweet, it’s excitement, you’re a senior and you’re a leader on the team,” Markanovich said. “But then you are also sad because it is a life you knew and it’s over.”

Both seniors are looking forward to some of the sweet parts of life after volleyball.

Markanovich is excited and a little worried for the amount of free time that she will have. She said she is going find a new way to manage her time. Bachynski is also looking forward to some time off.

“I am going to sleep in a little bit,” Bachynski said.

The break from volleyball also gives Bachynski more time to spend with her husband, Jordan Bachynski, a sophomore center for the ASU basketball team. She is really excited to support him more.

The seniors may admit that they are happy they do not have to go to practice anymore. In reality, however, they will miss workouts a lot.

Markanovich and Bachynski said that the aspect of the team they will miss the most is spending time with the other players and the bond they felt with their teammates.

“It’s not going to be the same because you are not going to be seeing each other every single day,” Bachynski said. “We are like sisters right now, we fight like sisters and we love each other a lot.”

Markanovich said that it would be hard for her to stay away from practice. She said she would probably find herself visiting the team to see how they are doing.

The seniors may miss the team, but the ASU volleyball team will certainly miss their presence next year.

Coach Jason Watson said the skills and experience that both seniors brought to the team will very much be missed.

“They have been in some situations and they have been able to help us,” Watson said. “We probably won’t really truly realize how much we leaned upon them until they are not here.”

The senior talked about how much they enjoyed being in that leadership role.

Most of the freshmen called Bachynski, “Mom,” because of the way she supported the new players. Markanovich also said she enjoyed being looked up to.

“It’s definitely been a fun experience because I have always looked up the seniors when I was an underclassman,” Markanovich said. “We have always had great leaders. Following in their footsteps and what they did you try to build upon that.”

Now that both seniors’ volleyball careers are over, they are trying to switch their focus to their careers off the court.

Markanovich is an interdisciplinary studies major with a focus on education and psychology, and hopes to become a high school counselor in the future.

She plans on going to graduate school to study counseling and is working to secure an internship working at a local high school.

Bachynksi is a communications major and will take on an internship with the Sun Devil Athletics media relations department next semester.

The athletes said that they would take away many lessons from playing on the team that will help them in their future careers.

Markanovich said that volleyball taught her mesh with others on a team. She said working with athletes with different skills and different backgrounds taught her how to adjust to work well with different people.

Bachynski said that lesson she learned on the team will transmit to other parts of her life.

“I think from my whole experience here I am going to take excellence in every part of my life,” Bachynski said. “In the weight room in the classroom we just strive for excellence, in my future work and my family that is what I am going to push for.”

Markanovich was a defensive stable in her four years at ASU. She totaled 358 blocks during her four years. Bachynski was always an offensive threat with 329 total kills during her career.

Watson said that he is happy that the seniors had so much athletic success on the team, but he is most proud that the two players went through his program and will receive a degree this May.

“For any athlete the single most important thing that they can leave any institution with is their degree,” Watson said. “The fact they have nice GPAs means that school is important to them. A degree from Arizona State is a valuable thing and we hope they put it to good work.”

Before their final match against UA both seniors said that one of their favorite memories was when ASU upset then No. 2 Cal in Berkley.

Their favorite memory might have changed when ASU beat their rival UA at home on Senior Night.

When the seniors thought about their last game at ASU they described it yet again as bittersweet.

It could not have been scripted better.

It was game point, when ASU volleyball took on UA on Senior Night.

The ball was set to senior outside hitter Malia Bachynski and Wells Fargo Arena erupted when Bachynski smacked the ball to the ground, winning the match.

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Ashley Kastl said they wanted to win this game for their seniors and it was amazing to see Bachynski get the last point.

“That was the most outstanding thing ever when she got that kill,” Kastl said. “I was so happy for her. That’s how you go out as a senior.”

Senior middle blocker Sonja Markanovich and Bachynski had never beaten their bitter rival UA. Defeating the tournament-bound Wildcats showed how much the Sun Devils have improved.

Freshman outside hitter Nora Tuioti-Mariner said that beating the rival meant a lot to the entire team.

“In the beginning of the whole match we were all just pissed off, it’s UA, it’s our rival,” Tuioti-Mariner said. “We wanted to put everything out on the court.”

ASU started off their final match of the season slow. They could not really get any offense going in the opening serves. The Sun Devils finished the opening set hitting .047 and UA took the first set 25-20.

Then after making some adjustments the Sun Devils came out firing. They went on to take the next two sets and were one win away from winning the match.

Coach Jason Watson said it was really important to take the match in the fourth set.

“That fifth game has not been kind to us,” Watson said. “The fifth game is a flat out sprint so anything can happen. It is nice to close it out in four and then you do not have to rely on that game five.”

ASU knew that UA was going to come out tough in the final set. The Wildcats were down to their last set and wanted to push the match to five games.

UA jumped out to 9-4 lead to start the fourth set and it looked like it was going to a five game match.

But the Sun Devils stayed composed and did not let the Wildcats get out to a huge lead.

The Sun Devils greatest run came late in the game. With UA up 22-18, only three points away from victory, the ASU offense came alive.

A fantastic block by Kastl brought the Sun Devils within one at 22-21. Then block created some momentum that gave the Sun Devils confidence that this was their match.

“No block was bigger than Ashley Kastl’s there in game four,” Watson said. “I think that turned the tide emotionally for us. It got us back into it.”

ASU finished the night with 13 team blocks. Watson said that the team really improved their blocks and defense against UA’s left side hitters since the last time the teams faced off. That was a huge factor in the victory.

Once the Wildcats hit 23 points the Sun Devils never let them score again and won the set 25-23. ASU took the match 3-1.

The ASU volleyball team went into their Tuesday match against Arizona with nothing to lose.

With a rivalry game you can throw the stat book out the window.

The ASU volleyball team went into their Tuesday match against UA with nothing to lose. Their only goal was to come out and beat their bitter rival on their home court.

UA had a lot to gain by beating the Sun Devils. With a win the Wildcats could improve their chances of entering the NCAA tournament.

ASU did not help their chances early in the match. The Sun Devils lost a close first set losing by only four points.

Then they came out flat to start the second set and lost 25-12.

Coming out of the locker room ASU bounced back early in the third set. The Sun Devils went up 4-0 with the help of an ace by sophomore libero Stephanie Preach.

But the Wildcats rallied back to bring the score close. The third set featured a classic back and forth match with eight tied scores and two lead changes.

Junior middle blocker Erica Wilson kept the Sun Devils in the game with an impressive third set. She had eight kills at the end of the night.

After a long rally ASU was awarded their 25th point and they took the set. UA players were not happy with the call and talked to the judges after the play.

The Wildcats were now up 2-1 and the Sun Devils entered into the fourth set still down to their last set.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Clause came off the bench for the Sun Devils in the match. She really attacked and made her presence known in the fourth set. Clause finished the night with five kills for the Sun Devils.

ASU kept the game close in the early serves. The Sun Devils tied the score at 7 after a Wilson kill.

Later in the match the Wildcats when on a 7-0 run to increase their lead.

The run forced ASU to burn their final timeout. When the Sun Devils returned to the floor they responded well and went on a 3-0 run to bring the score to 18-11.

Despite the late rally the Wildcats ended up winning the set and taking the match 3-1.

It was the last match for UA seniors: outside hitter Marketa Hanzlova, outside hitter Courtney Karst and middle blocker Cursty Jackson.

Both Jackson and Karst had impressive senior nights. Karst finished with 18 kills and Jackson ended the night with 17.

The Sun Devils return home to face the Wildcats again this Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.

It will be the last game of the season for the Sun Devils and the last game ever for the seniors on the team.

The team would like nothing better than to avenge their loss on Tuesday night with a win this Saturday.

No. 1 USC and No. 2 UCLA were just too much for the Sun Devils.

Despite a solid weekend from Markanovich and freshman setter Shannan McCready, ASU fell to USC and UCLA. (Photo by Beth Easterbrook)

The ASU volleyball team went into their weekend matches against USC and UCLA with optimism and hope.

The Sun Devils (8-21, 4-16) were on a three-game winning streak and were playing the best volleyball of the year. But No. 1 USC (24-4, 19-2 in Pac-12) and No. 2 UCLA (24-5, 17,4) were just too much for the Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils first traveled to USC to take on the best team in the country. USC took the first set by jumping out to a quick lead. Then ASU made it a game by tying it up at 1-1.

After the break, the Trojans came out and won a close third set 25-20. ASU was looking to rally back and tie up the score but USC ran away with the fourth set 25- 12. USC took the match 3-1.

USC’s defense made it tough for ASU to connect on most attacks. USC sophomore libero Natalie Hagglund had an impressive 24 digs to defend the Trojans court.

ASU senior middle blocker Sonja Markanovich led the Sun Devils with 13 kills and an incredible .867 hitting percentage. The senior is making the most of the last few games she has at ASU.

ASU freshman setter Shannan McCready showed how much her skills have improved this year against USC. The freshman posted 48 assists in the loss — one of her highest totals of the season.

UCLA sweeps ASU

After the loss to USC, ASU moved on to face the Bruins on Sunday. Things did not get easier for the Sun Devils when they faced the second best team in the country.

ASU came out to better start against UCLA than they did against USC.

The first set was a back and forth set that came down to the final points. The Sun Devils were only down 24-23, but then the Bruins finished it off with a kill by freshman outside hitter Karsta Lowe.

Late in the second set, the Bruins increased their lead to 19-16. After that the Bruins never looked back and took the set 25-19.

ASU was down to their last set and put up a resilient effort to push the match to the brink. With UCLA one point away, redshirt sophomore Ashley Kastl and Markanovich closed a block to bring the match to extra points.

But as the game wore on the Bruins ended up taking the set 29-27 and winning the match 3-0.

Yet again, the Sun Devils looked to their upperclassmen to lead the team. Junior middle blocker Erica Wilson had an impressive night with 10 kills and a .714 hitting percentage.

Devils face Cats

The Sun Devils were hoping to end their season on a high note by defeating one of the top ranked teams this past weekend.

They now set their sets on a new goal to end the season: to sweep their rival UA (18-11, 10-10).

Sophomore libero Stephanie Preach said the rivalry is pretty intense on the volleyball court.

“Oh, we want to kill them, just like everyone else does,” Preach said.

The Sun Devils have quick turn around when they head out on the road to face the Wildcats in Tucson on Tuesday. The Wildcats then come to Tempe to face the Sun Devils in their last game of the season.

UA has a five hundred record in the Pac-12 and their next two games against ASU have huge implications on their season. Coach Jason Watson said they need these two wins to hopefully get into the NCAA tournament.

The Sun Devils would like nothing better than to end the Wildcats’ tournament hopes.

Wilson said that the team’s main goal now is to get the Kachina Doll. The doll is awarded to any ASU athletic team that defeats their UA opponent.

Watson said that the teams have a great rivalry and his team is up to the challenge to prove which school has the better athletic program.

Also he hopes two wins against UA can create some momentum heading into the next season.

“It would just be nice to end the season with a couple of W’s, so we can build on it heading into the spring season,” Watson said.

Wilson said that sweeping the Wildcats would the best way to end their season.

“I just shows how much we have in us and how much we can compete,” Wilson said. “Just because we didn’t start the season off as good as we wanted to, finishing off great will make the season even better.”

ASU faces a challenge this weekend when they face 2nd ranked Cal and No. 5 Stanford.

TALL ORDER: ASU sophomore libero Stephanie Preach jumps for a serve during the Sun Devils loss to Stanford on Sept. 22. The strength of the Pac-12 is on full display this weekend when No. 2 UCLA and No. 1 USC head to Tempe. (Photo by Beth Easterbrook)

The ASU volleyball team is not the same team that they were a month ago. Neither are No. 2 UCLA and No. 1 USC.

The Sun Devils are on a three-game winning streak and haven’t looked better this season. They look to continue the streak when they travel to the top-ranked Los Angeles schools.

Sophomore libero Stephanie Preach is confident heading into the weekend because the team has improved so much late in the season.

“I think our team has gotten a lot better just in these past three games,” Preach said. “We have the talent, we have the skill; it’s just a matter of putting it on the court.”

Coach Jason Watson said his team has made vast improvements since the last time ASU has played UCLA and USC. But he also said that those teams have been improving as well.

“I think we are better,” Watson said. “We played well, especially against USC last time. But they are also better. USC is better and UCLA is better.”

The last time the Sun Devils took on the Trojans they staged a late game comeback. ASU was down 10 points late in their last set. They then tied up the score at 24 and pushed the game into extra sets. USC ended up winning the match.

The Sun Devils are looking to avoid falling behind in this match. Preach said the key to this weekend’s games was to stay consistent and stick with USC and UCLA the entire match.

Junior middle blocker Erica Wilson said that the team has been playing more in sync and that should help them this weekend.

“I think in the beginning of the year we definitely fragmented as a team a lot on court,” Wilson said. “Now we collaborate a lot more, we stay together and we talk to each other more and that helps out a lot.”

ASU defense will keep their sights on USC senior outside hitter Alex Jupiter. Jupiter hurt the Sun Devils with 15 kills the last time they played and was awarded Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after throwing down 14 kills against Oregon last week.

USC should be focusing their defensive attention on ASU redshirt sophomore outside hitter Ashley Kastl. Kastl has had 27 kills in two matches in the past two weeks.

The Sun Devils are playing the rest of the season with nothing to lose. With three wins under their belt, the team is looking to upset the top two teams in the country.

Last year, right about this time in the season, the Sun Devils upset then-No. 2 Cal in their gym. The team is looking to have a similar road trip to end their season on this year.

“We did it last year,” Preach said. “If we just stay on task and do what we need to do we can definitely upset this team,”

Watson understands the challenge that is coming this weekend. With the way that the Sun Devils have been playing he is confident in their chances.

“We got a challenging weekend, you know, with No. 1 and No. 2 at their place,” Watson said. “But I like how we are playing volleyball so I like our chances.”

Unlike the last three matches, ASU beat Utah in five sets.

FIRST SWEEP: ASU redshirt sophomore Ashley Kastl spikes the ball against her opposite number during the Sun Devils’ win over Colorado on Friday. ASU defeated both Pac-12 foes over the weekend for the first time this season. (Photo by Samuel Rosenbaum)

The fourth time is the charm.

For the fourth time this season, the ASU volleyball team pushed their opponent to five sets. But unlike the last three matches, ASU finally came out on top, beating Utah in five sets.

Coach Jason Watson said that the team’s past experience helped them close out the Utes.

“We have been in these situations where have lost some five game matches,” Watson said. “You get to a point where you know how to respond better.”

It was a roller-coaster match for the Sun Devils. Each team played brilliantly, but also struggled at times.

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Ashley Kastl stepped up late in the second set. She took charge of the offense and kept the Sun Devils in the match.

She finished the night with an impressive 27 kills.

Sophomore middle blocker Alexis Pinson said that Kastl inspired the entire team with her performance.

“It definitely helps because we see someone taking charge and picking up the intensity and energy,” Pinson said. “It’s hard not to follow along with her.”

Kastl, however, was greatly tested by Utah’s strong defense.

Watson discussed before the game that the Utes were a very successful blocking team. They closed 17 blocks to stifle the Sun Devil attack.

Watson said that the relationship with the setter and hitter is the key to defeating a strong block.

“Our set tempo and location needed to be better,” Watson said. “The set was inside a little too much and we were hitting into their block.”

Watson said that it was not the best that the team has played. But they found a way to win when things were not going well, and that shows how the team is resilient.

Buffs beaten

It seemed like there were two different ASU volleyball teams at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night.

The team that started the match against Colorado did not look like the normal Sun Devils.

Coach Jason Watson said the change in schedule might have caused the Sun Devils to come out flat. They had to wait until 8 p.m. to take the court.

CU ended up taking the first set 25-23.

Poor serving hurt in the Sun Devils’ first set loss. ASU recorded four service errors to CU.

In the second set ASU returned to old form and beat the Buffaloes in a close set.

Then after the break the Sun Devils came out rolling. They never lost the lead in the third set and took the fourth set by six points to take the match.

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Kylee Terhune said the difference between the first set and the rest of the match was that ASU fix small errors that were hurting the team.

“We really hit our stride with the things that we needed to take care of,” Terhune said. “We definitely ended better than we started,”

The highlight of the night came from freshman setter Shannan McCready who played soccer in high school. A ball was sailing to the ground when McCready saved a ball by kicking it into the air.

“It was so low and my foot was right there,” McCready said. “I have decent control with my feet so I just popped it up.”
