BRAVO to the East Valley Tribune not being bought out. Freedom Communications Inc., the Tribune's parent company, agreed to form a partnership with two private equity firms so the publishing family could retain control. Gannet Co., which owns The Arizona Republic, had placed a bid to try to buy the paper. Though the Tribune is about a fifth of the size of the Republic, it's still its main competition. And that's a good thing. We don't want to see this become a one-newspaper Valley.
BOO to the Red Sox. Because of you clowns, our managing editor has been AWOL for the past few weeks. We miss him.
BRAVO to tequila. And to Mexico for trying to implement more quality control. Thanks for trying to give us the best, most potent body-shot beverage ever.
BOO to Jill Noe's knee - more specifically, her anterior cruciate ligament. The dang thing tore and left ASU women's basketball without its top shooting guard.
BRAVO to diversity. 22 percent of students enrolled at ASU this year are from ethnic minority backgrounds. The more diverse viewpoints on this campus, the better.
BOO to the proposed amendment to Tempe's party ordinance. Now, if police come to your house because of a loud party, they give you a written warning and tell you that if they have to return within 12 hours, you'll be facing a hefty fine. After 12 hours are up, if the cops haven't come back, the warning means nothing. But with the new amendment, that warning would be good for 90 days, basically banning any more loud parties from your house for a whole semester. This city takes all the fun out of college.
BRAVO to the new school for homeless children on Apache Boulevard. The new campus of the Thomas J. Pappas School will open in June.
BOO to anti-gay graffiti. This campus is supposed to be a place of tolerance. Graffiti like that shouldn't happen. And if it does, it should be painted over immediately, not left to offend students for days.
BRAVO to teaching assistants. The Associated Students of ASU's Graduate and Professional Student Association implemented a new system for undergraduates to nominate teaching or research assistants for awards. If you have a TA who has made a difference in your education, tell them so.
BOO to Saki's closing. Though the Pacific Rim Café is being replaced by Grilled Expedition, a restaurant that will probably have much better food, we're sure going to miss those bombers.
