The University of Nebraska can't help but feel a little stupid this weekend after firing its head coach, Frank Solich.
The team improved over a 7-7 record last year to a 9-3 mark this season going into its bowl game.
Usually improvement is rewarded, not discouraged. If athletic director Steve Pederson was going to make a move, it should have been last year.
There's a distinct possibility that Pederson's actions may turn off top coaches from wanting to coach a program that doesn't accept 9-3 seasons.
Nebraska is old-fashioned in every sense of the word when it comes to its football program. It even insists on sticking to an option offense during an era of high-octane passing attacks.
With this move, the athletic department has moved into today's no-nonsense approach when it comes to winning, possibly to an unfathomable degree.
Perhaps the football program can do the same and scrap an offense that just doesn't work anymore in big-time college football.
