Devil Dish: Cactus League kick off

An annual tradition unique to Arizona has come upon us once again.

On Wednesday, the Cactus League Spring Training season kicked off, as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-4 in Tucson.

For one month, we have an opportunity to attend 181 Spring Training games played by 12 major-league teams across the state.

Tickets are priced to fit the meager budgets of college students. You can get lawn seats at most games for just $5. For less than a Starbucks venti mocha latte, you can relax for three hours and take in a baseball game.

The players also enjoy themselves by signing autographs and mingling with fans. Last season, I managed to get future Hall of Famer Frank Thomas to sign a ball. In all the regular-season games I've attended, the same chance has never occurred.

Before the season loses its innocence with Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek tackling New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, try to catch a Spring Training game.

It's well worth it.
