Devil Dish: Harrington not the man

For years, I backed Joey Harrington as much as anyone. I thought he was the man to lead Detroit to the NFL's upper echelon. But I have finally had to face the truth.

Granted, the Lions have more problems than Harrington. The offensive line is below average, Charles Rogers finally stayed healthy but then got suspended, Roy Williams is hurt again, and Kevin Jones is in a bit of a sophomore slump.

After seeing Jeff Garcia lead them to a 13-10 win Sunday over Cleveland, it is clear the team responds to him better, and he must remain the starter.

However, Garcia is old and wearing down. Many think they should go after Philip Rivers, but there is another young backup who I believe is even more attractive, and that is Atlanta's Matt Schaub.

Schaub has experience in the West Coast offense, both from college at Virginia and his two years in Atlanta. On top of that, he has performed. Look no further than his 298-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Patriots earlier this season when Mike Vick was injured.

As for Harrington, hopefully he will get a chance with another team, but it seems obvious both he and the Lions must find their futures elsewhere.
