Police Beat: Man hit with plastic candlestick

ASU police reported the following incident Tuesday:

A 20-year-old Indian Wells, Ariz., man was arrested Saturday morning near San Pablo Hall on charges of theft of services and threatening and intimidating. The man allegedly took a taxi from a Tempe grocery store to a friend's house in Gilbert, the Tempe office of the Motor Vehicle Division and ASU and owed $47 for the trip. The cab driver reportedly asked the man four or five times during the trip if he had enough money to cover the fare. Though the suspect allegedly said he had money, once the driver parked in Lot 60, the suspect reportedly said had to get money from a friend in Manzanita Hall.

"[The suspect] said he did not have enough money for the cab ride, but he could get the money from someone at Manzanita or Palo Verde West," police reported. "[He] has lots of friends." After the man reportedly started walking away from Manzanita and the driver called police, the suspect allegedly turned and asked for money from the driver.

"[The driver] felt threatened," police reported. "[He] thought [the suspect] may injure him." The suspect was arrested, interviewed at the ASU police station and released. About two hours after being released, the man was arrested by Tempe police on another theft charge. "[He] had hired Yellow Cab to pick him up at University Drive and Mill Avenue and transport him throughout Tempe and Mesa," Tempe police reported Monday. "[He] did not have any money for pay for his fare."

Tempe police reported the following incidents Tuesday:

An 18-year-old Tempe man was arrested near his residence on the 4100 block of South Mill Avenue late Monday night and charged with assault. "[The man] assaulted his roommate by hitting him in the head with a plastic candlestick and scratching his neck, causing injury," police reported.

Two Phoenix men, ages 19 and 23, were arrested early Tuesday morning on the 1200 block of West Seventh Street. The two men, who are brothers, were reportedly involved in a physical fight and charged with assault. The 19-year-old was also charged with having alcohol in his system because he allegedly had a .186 blood-alcohol concentration.

A 43-year-old transient man was arrested on the 1900 block of East Broadway Road Monday morning. He was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing a public throughway and giving false information to police. "[He] threw a punch at [a police officer] and missed and then pushed [the officer] in the shoulder, causing him to step back," police said. The man then reportedly ran but was tackled and taken into custody. The man reportedly told police he ran because he knew a warrant had been issued for his arrest in California. The man also gave false information to police, had needles in his backpack and ran into traffic, causing motorists to slam on their brakes, police reported.
