The ASU community can let their voices be heard about changes they want to see made to Sparky.

Voting for the head of the new Sparky costume opened to University students, faculty, alumni, season ticket holders and Sun Devil Club members Monday at 12:01 a.m.

By entering an ASU email at sparky.asu.edu., eligible voters will have the option to vote on one of four new options for Sparky’s on-field costume.

The voting ends on Sunday, May 5 at 11:59 p.m. and the wining costume will be announced via ASU’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The vote on the new Sparky comes after a lot of negative feedback from ASU students regarding the mascot’s new look back in early March.

Tempe Undergraduate Student Government President Mark Naufel said he was pleased with the way the university responded to students’ criticism, coming to the student government to get the look that students wanted.

“They treated us like this was our thing. We mattered most in the decision making process,” Naufel said. “It was really a great collaboration between administrators, students (and) the alumni.”

Students looking to return Sparky to the way he was before his March 1 makeover are in luck, he said.

“There’s an option on there that literally looks like the old Sparky; not many differences,” Naufel said.

Greg Campbell, director of Communications, Marketing & Strategic Communications for the University, also said there is an option that looks very much like the old Sparky, but it’s “in the eye of the beholder.”

Despite the backlash, Naufel said he doesn’t feel the University acted maliciously when they announced Sparky’s new look without prior student approval.

“I think they wanted it to be a surprise and excitement,” Naufel said. “When they saw that students were upset, they really did backtrack on the decision.”

The newly selected Sparky will make his first appearance during the fall of the 2013 athletic year but the current Sparky costume will stay in place until then.
