Remy Martin ignites ASU offense in win over Cal

The sophomore guard scored a career-high 24 points off the bench, hitting five three-pointers

ASU men's basketball improved its record to 2-1 in Pac-12 play on Wednesday night in a 80-66 win against California, led by a standout performance from sophomore guard Remy Martin

Martin led the Sun Devils with a career-high 24 points and eight assists. Redshirt senior forward Zylan Cheatham filled the box score, scoring 17 points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out two assists, and registering a steal and a block.

Redshirt junior guard Rob Edwards and freshman guard Luguentz Dort finished with 13 points apiece.

ASU struggled out of the gate against Cal's 2-3 zone defense. ASU missed its first 10 of 11 shots and shot 3 for 19 up until the last six minutes of the first half. The Sun Devils shot 39 percent in the first half, and it could have been worse if it were not for Martin's shotmaking and playmaking.

Martin came off the bench for a second straight game and sparked a 13-2 run to end the first half to trim the his team's deficit to two points. He scored 12 points and assisted on five baskets in the first half.

After the first half, ASU played both ends of the floor well and flipped the tables on Cal.

With the game tied at 41-41, ASU went on a 19-5 run in the second half. The Sun Devils held Cal without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes in the second half. 

Martin continued to lead ASU throughout the second half. Martin scored 12 points in the second half, hitting three three-pointers. Martin shot 5-7 on three-pointers overall for the game.

The Sun Devils forced Cal to switch between man defense, zone defense and a press defense to try to slow down the team's offensive attack. 

ASU continuously found ways to expose each defensive strategy en route to 47 second-half points.Cal shot 38 percent from the field for the game. The Sun Devils forced Cal into 13 turnovers for the game. 

ASU will take on Stanford on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 4:00 p.m. MST.
