ASU alumni Ed Ableser, Andrew Sherwood and Juan Mendez speak about ASU at a meet-and-greet in Daley Park on Sept. 9, 2012. (Photo by Taylor Peterson) Democrat Ed Ableser was declared the winner in the 26th Legislative District race for Arizona State Senate and defeated Independent Dale Eames. The 26th Legislative District includes parts of Mesa, south Scottsdale and Tempe, including the ASU Tempe campus. Ableser is an ASU alumnus and a former state representative. In 2012, he defeated incumbent Republican Jerry Lewis to win the position in the state Senate. In a 2008 Political Courage Test, Ableser said his primary legislative priorities were to increase funding to education programs while mandating that class sizes be lowered. He also said he believed Arizona should be a worldwide leader in solar power. According to votesmart.org, Ableser has refused to provide his positions on key issues in a 2014 Political Courage test. On his Facebook page, Eames said he believes in equal rights for all, protection of personal property, limited government and upholding the constitution. He also said believes in high quality education and avoiding the burden of debt. State Press reporters Kelcie Grega and Shelby Slade contributed to this article.
Democrats Andrew Sherwood and Juan Mendez won in the race for the 26th Legislative District’s Arizona State House of Representatives after defeating Republican James Roy. Mendez, an ASU alumnus who previously ran a nonprofit organization focused on connecting homeless with resources, was elected to the Arizona House in 2012. He serves on the Insurance Retirement Committee and the Reform and Human Services Committee. Mendez wants to close tax loopholes for out-of-state corporations. He also wants to raise education funding and restrict gifts to legislators. In 2013, Mendez received national attention when he chose to open a House meeting with a secular speech over a more traditional religious speech. Sherwood, an ASU alumnus with a degree in interdisciplinary studies, was elected to the House in 2012. On his website, he highlights issues such as supporting small businesses, improving schools in Arizona. He is also opposed to cutting salaries for Arizona’s police and fire departments. Roy ran unopposed in the Republican primaries and has never held a public office. On his website, Roy said he is a concerned citizen who doesn’t want any more freedoms eroded away. He is a strong supporter of immigration, but only if it is legal immigration. He is also a strong supporter of state sovereignty and the Second Amendment. State Press reporters Kelcie Grega and Shelby Slade contributed to this article.
