While it's not the biggest festival in the world, once a year, it feels like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is just that. Between the lineups, style and social media buzz, Coachella has had a laundry list of talented artists appear on-stage over the last two decades.

In case you haven't gathered from some of my previous reviews, I'm a huge fan of animated films.

I want to start off this review with the sentiment that Christian filmmaking is not something I am, nor do I have interest in being, an expert in.

The image of a superhero can vary, but one thing is certain: Fans will wholeheartedly defend their favorites. There's one character who I love just as much as those upper-tier heroes like Batman and Spider-Man, and who never seems to get the proper respect: Shazam.

In the 1980s, bands like Van Halen, Whitesnake and Poison ruled the airwaves, and notions of both pop and rock were quickly personified as neon-clad bad boys who wanted nothing more than to have a good time, usually in Los Angeles.

The period between the end of World War II and the start of the Cold War is a fascinating piece of global history; a time when the world's nations finally ceased fire and had to come to grips with the atrocities committed by each side.

I might be one of the few critics you'll encounter who has no problems with the amount of remakes coming out in recent years. I see no reason not to try a different approach to a story if a new idea, concept or filmmaking technique comes along because even if it fails, the original still exists in all its glory.

Dreamworks sometimes gets a bad reputation for being "Diet Pixar," and frankly, that's undeserved. While it has certainly had its share of lazily odd misfires over the years, Dreamworks has more consistently than not put out largely entertaining and unique animated properties.

Going into "Alita: Battle Angel," I assumed I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into, and I honestly wasn't ecstatic about that prediction.

Everything can be forgiven in a comedy if it's funny enough, but the best comedies are the ones that go beyond the laughs and have some actual insight.

I have a simple question to propose: How did we get here?!

2018 was a great year for films and, in an exciting twist, some of those great films came to us from Netflix of all places.

The nominations for the 2019 Academy Awards have been announced as of Tuesday, Jan. 22. Reactions have been everywhere and varied as usual — and The State Press has allowed me to present my insight on what to expect.

There is a scene in "The Kid Who Would Be King" where Sir Patrick Stewart, wearing an extra-large Led Zeppelin t-shirt, conjures a telekinetic maelstrom of friend chicken and cherry soda, just to prove a point about the value of quests — if that does not give you a grasp on what this movie is, I do not know what will.

Oh January, what an interesting month for film you are.

Dramatic storylines, grand performances and exquisite fashion design are expected to dominate the screen in period piece dramas, but a period piece directed by Yorgos Lanthimos is anything but expected.

There are plenty of holiday classics out there, but what about the guilty pleasures? What about the films that, admittedly aren't very good, but have a special place just during the holidays? I want to shine a light on some of my favorites, so here are my top five holiday guilty pleasure movies.

The relationship between former Senator Gary Hart and the media is one that poses a lot of interesting questions: what lengths should media outlets go to in order to get a story? What kind of view should be on a politician's personal life while they are in public office? If so, how should citizens treat that view?

Stieg Larsson and David Lagercrantz's "Millennium" book series has captivated readers for over a decade now with its mix of espionage and tech-thriller elements. There have already been two well-known incarnations of the novels — the 2009 Swedish film, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" directed by Niels Arden Oplev (which spawned its own trilogy) and the 2011 American remake of the same name directed by David Fincher.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays: the candy, costumes and excitement — I love it all. However, I’m also a self-proclaimed scaredy-cat, and while I love some of the more goofy and “spoopy” aspects of the holiday, I get scared way too easily by horror movies.
