ASU Coming Out Week comes to a conclusion tomorrow, and, unfortunately, its potential was not fully reached. While there was an event held on every campus, Polytechnic was the only one to hold more than one. We don’t mean to fault any one group for the meager display of pride compared to some other universities, but rather, we want to offer some ways in which we think the event could be improved, and clarify why we think it so important to do so.

Every story requires its own unique way of being told; some are suited for print, some for digital expression, some for film, some for broadcast and some for a combination of mediums.

Bravo to Hong Kong demonstrators who are taking a stand for democracy by protesting outside of the chief executive's office. The peaceful protest is in support of universal suffrage and no restrictions on who can run for political office.

Break out your flannel shirts, Sun Devils! October is here, and as usual, it will bring some pretty great things: Halloween parties, Oktoberfest, pleasant walks to class, and piles of leaves to violently crunch after a disastrous midterm (no judgement). But perhaps the most exciting part of October is something far less predictable than temperatures in the 70s: Major League Baseball playoffs.

If you do good work, you get a raise. Whether a law firm, a nonprofit organization, or a university, any good enterprise operates on such a principle. It’s an assurance upon which every ASU student hopes to someday capitalize when he or she enters the workforce.

Bravo to Eric Holder, the U.S. Attorney General, for his role in preserving civil, voting and LGBT rights in this country. He resigned today, but will continue in his position until his successor is confirmed. He reportedly reached his decision over Labor Day while conversing with President Barack Obama.

Dear esteemed committee members,
(09/23/14 12:05am)
A common theme of our editorials thus far this semester has been questioning the priorities of authority: the priorities of our gubernatorial candidates, our state Legislature, our city council, our state representatives, and most of all, our university.

Bravo to Todd Graham and Ray Anderson. Both men donated $500,000 to the Momentum campaign to renovate Sun Devil Stadium. It is a generous commitment to bettering the school.

Boo-ravo to Olive Garden's "unlimited pasta passes" and the controversy surrounding them. For $100, 1,000 customers get to eat as much pasta (and soup, salads, and breadsticks) as they like between Sept. 22 and Nov. 9. However, the passes sold out within an hour and there's now a flourishing black market for them. Bravo pasta; boo black markets.

Arizona’s gubernatorial race is caught in a deadlock. With Arizona voters still unsure of the best person to lead the Grand Canyon State, the Sept. 10 debate held in Chandler Center for the Arts between Democratic Party candidate Fred DuVal and Republican Party candidate Doug Ducey held a great deal of importance.

Bicycles are an extremely important part of many ASU students’ lives. If you were one of many students who tried to make it to campus this morning in the record-breaking torrential downpour, perhaps you were reminded of this. Considering only 20 percent of our student body lives on campus, bicycles are for many students the only way of making it to class. Although Walk-Only Zones may have put a dent in the prominence of biking on ASU, two-wheel transportation remains one of the most effective ways of getting around.

After nearly a year and a half of construction, College Avenue Commons became the newest addition to ASU’s Tempe campus with its dedication on Wednesday. The $54 million structure, located on the southeast corner of College Avenue and 6th Street, functions primarily as the home of the Del E. Webb School of Construction, but is largely a mixed-use facility.

Boo to Joan Rivers's death on Thursday. The 81-year-old actress lit up TV screens and stages since the 1960s with her acerbic wit and biting critique. She will be missed.

Maintaining priorities is a crucial aspect in governing a state as large as Arizona. Limited time and resources necessitate that some things receive more attention than others, and with Arizona mired in the effects of the recession, the choices of where to allocate money are only becoming more difficult. Unfortunately, as seen in our investigative story this week, the campuses of Arizona’s three public universities have become a victim of this penny-pinching.

Boo to the unexpected reveal that Hello Kitty is, in fact, not a kitty. Sanrio, the company that produces Hello Kitty, clarified that the popular character is actually a British schoolgirl who looks like a cat.

On Aug. 26, the nine congressional districts of Arizona will hold their primary elections for their respective party candidates. Among these nine, there are three that could be described as “battlegrounds,” meaning hotly-contested elections that could sway either way. The 1st District covers nearly half of the state, stretching from Flagstaff to parts of Chandler. Located in the southernmost part of Arizona, the 2nd District contains most of Tucson, and about 100 miles northwest lies Tempe's own 9th District, in the heart of the Valley.

Boo to Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The Republicans had plenty of newsworthy moments during his time in office, but his indictment on Aug. 15 is the biggest and messiest.
