As the semester draws to a close, most thoughts on campus have turned toward exams, presentations and that ubiquitous final task: writing term papers. Of course, most of these things involve prior reading as well, but few people get plaudits for “reading well.” Reading is an underrated skill next to the celebrated talent of writing, as it is technical or of a more esoteric variety.

In fall 2012, the Food and Drug Administration will require all cigarette manufacturers to print more noticeable and colorful warnings on packing. Most of these images will depict the effects of continued and habitual usage in smokers, and are intended to discourage paying customers from reaching out across the aisle and picking up a pack of smokes.

In January of this year, President Obama committed eight billion dollars to high-speed train systems across the country in his State of the Union address. The proposed projects would span a total of 31 states and create a network of high-speed “rail corridors” between large population centers on both coasts and the Midwest. CNN reports that the trains — some of which are expected to hit speeds of 200 mph — will connect cities that are close to each other and hence have a high volume of daily traffic (which would translate to passenger usage numbers).

The month of May signals the successful completion of yet another semester and an extended break for most students. It brings with it a corresponding increase in the general happiness on campus. As the first weekend of spring break unraveled itself (in more ways than one for a few people), a more subtle change took effect. Though you probably didn’t notice it if you were one of the lucky (or unlucky) few who stayed back in Arizona, the rest of the country shifted forward an hour and entered the realm of daylight savings time.

Under the provisions of this law, it will now be legal for licensed gun owners to carry guns for private use into preserves like Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and any other parks in states where the possession and carrying of firearms is allowed.
